Investigating the role of preference variation in the perceptions of railway passengers in Great Britain
This study explores the factors associated with passenger satisfaction on the UK railways. To uncover taste variation, the data was segmented into three homogeneous groups of passengers through a latent class ordered logit model, whereby the class allocation was based on observed personal and trip characteristics. The findings suggest that there is significant variation in the impact of service attributes on overall satisfaction across the segmen…
When Covid-19 came to town
Town centres in the economically developed world have struggled in recent years to attract sufficient visitors to remain economically sustainable. However, decline has not been uniform, and there is considerable variation in how different town centres have coped with these challenges. The arrival of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic public health emergency in early 2020 has provided an additional reason for people to avoid urban centres for a s…
Quantifying the impacts of subsidy policies on home-to-school pupil travel by bus in England
In the current economic climate, the British Government is revising a whole range of policy sectors to highlight areas where savings and cuts can be made. The policy of subsidising home-to-school transport for pupils who live beyond a set distance from the school which they attend has been in place since 1944 and this policy costs local authorities in England over £1 billion a year. The aim of this paper is to examine the outcomes of policy choic…
Multilevel modelling of Demand Responsive Transport (DRT) trips in Greater Manchester based on area-wide socio-economic data
Providing public transport in areas of low demand has long proved to be a challenge to policy makers and practitioners. With the developing economic, social and environmental trends, there is pressure for alternative solutions to the policy of subsidising conventional bus services. One potential solution is to adopt more flexible routes and/or timetables to better match the required demand. Therefore such 'on demand' or 'Demand Responsive Transpo…
Quantifying the transport-related impacts of parental school choice in England
The effects of area-wide road speed and curvature on traffic casualties in England
The effect of the London congestion charge on road casualties
Mode choice of older and disabled people
Modeling Count Data with Excess Zeroes
There are many studies in social sciences, such as traffic accident analysis, in which the event counts may be characterized by a large number of zero observations. In this article, a proposed model that takes into account both the zero-count state and the nonzero-count state is used to describe the traffic accident phenomenon. The probability of the zero-count state (p) and the mean number of event counts (μ) in the non-zero-count state may depe…
