  • The December 3 Impeachment Square and Queer Visibility

    Seong-Jo Jeong, So-Yeon Cho et al.•ARTICLE•Korean Journal of Sociology•2025

  • Industry Culture Matters

    Open Access•Heeyoung Lee, Soo-Yeon Moon et al.•ARTICLE•Violence Against Women•2023•References: 12

This study analyzes factors of sexual harassment in the workplace based on sample survey data on women working in the Korean film industry ( n = 449) using logistic regression analysis. It finds higher education, younger age, and union membership increase harassment risk, suggesting backlash against feminism post-#MeToo. A higher proportion of men at shooting locations raises harassment likelihood, reflecting the industry's unique conditions. Lon…

  • Multiple Encounters and Reconstructed Identities

    Na-Young Lee•ARTICLE•philoSOPHIA•2022

This paper explores multiple encounters between activist-survivors of Japanese military sexual slavery (“comfort women” or halmonis, meaning “elderly women” or “grannies” in Korean) and solidarity activists. I mainly focus on the stories of two foundational figures in the ongoing justice campaign for the survivors, both of whom faced that forceful military act (between 1932 and 1945) as teenage girls in colonized Korea, although in dramatically d…

  • Challenging the Global Human Rights Regime

    Na-Young Lee•ARTICLE•Journal of Asian American Studies•2021•Cited by: 1

The purpose of this paper is to examine the implications of the movement to challenge the Japanese military system of sexual slavery as a transnational women's movement. In particular, it focuses on the ways in which the process came to resonate with global human rights regimes. Combining oral history interviews with archival research and participant observation, I locate the ways in which the human rights framework of the international community…

  • Un/forgettable histories of US camptown prostitution in South Korea

    Open Access•Na-Young Lee, Nayoung Lee•ARTICLE•Sexualities•2018

The military camptown in South Korea is a legacy of colonialism and a symbol of national insecurity in Korean history. From September 1945, when US troops arrived on the Korean peninsula for a transfer of power from the Japanese colonial empire, until the present day, the presence of American soldiers and military bases has been a familiar feature of Korean society. The purpose of this article is to trace the history of the US military camptown i…

Chyng Sun, Ekra Miezan et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Sexual…•2015

Objectives: The aim of the study was to assess the connections between pornography use (both frequency and interest in extreme pornography) and dyadic sexual relationships. Methods: Six-hundred eighty-five heterosexual South Korean male college students participated in an online survey. Results: The majority (84.5%) of respondents had viewed pornography, and for those who were sexually active (470 respondents), we found that higher interest in de…

  • Negotiating the Boundaries of Nation, Christianity, and Gender

    Na-Young Lee•ARTICLE•Asian Journal of Women s Studies•2011•Cited by: 2•References: 6

The 1980s in South Korea began with a military regime right after the explosive demise of the previous authoritarian regime. Korea's democratization movement was at its peak in the mid-1980s and confronted the military regime and eventually brought it down. This paper examines the Korean women's movement and military prostitution in the U.S. camp town (hereafter the kijich'on movement) during the democratic transition (the 1980s-1990s). It also l…
