  • Operation optimisation of micro pumped storage for decarbonisation of water and electricity distribution network in urban areas

Open Access•Arezoo Boroomandnia, Behzad Rismanchi et al.•ARTICLE•Sustainable Cities and Society•2025

The rapid growth in renewable energy generation has heightened the need for enhanced energy storage capacity. Micro Pumped Storage (MPS) offers a dual-function alternative to conventional batteries by integrating energy storage with non-potable water supply (NPWS) in high-rise buildings. This study hypothesises that jointly optimising MPS operation for emissions and water reuse can improve both environmental and economic performance. A multi-obje…

  • Exposure to Chinese famine in early life and the risk of multimorbidity in adulthood

Open Access•Jiahui Zhang, Le Zhang et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

Our findings indicate that famine exposure in mild, moderate and severe famine groups might be associated with an increased multimorbidity risk

  • Association between with household solid fuel use and successful aging among older people in China: A cross-sectional and perspective study from CHARLS

Open Access•Wenyan Wu, Xiaowei Zheng et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

Compared to clean fuel, using household solid fuel showed a negatively associated with successful aging among the elderly in China

  • Evaluating the role of ChatGPT in enhancing EFL writing assessments in classroom settings: A preliminary investigation

Open Access•Junfei Li, Jinyan Huang et al.•ARTICLE•Humanities and Social Sciences…•2024

Using generalizability (G-) theory and qualitative feedback analysis, this study evaluated the role of ChatGPT in enhancing English-as-a-foreign-language (EFL) writing assessments in classroom settings. The primary objectives were to assess the reliability of the holistic scores assigned to EFL essays by ChatGPT versions 3.5 and 4 compared to college English teachers and to evaluate the relevance of the qualitative feedback provided by these vers…

  • Optimal design of micro pumped-storage plants in the heart of a city

Open Access•Arezoo Boroomandnia, Behzad Rismanchi et al.•ARTICLE•Sustainable Cities and Society•2024

Growth in renewable energy generation leads to an urgent need of expanding energy storage capacity. While large pumped hydro storage remains the most established and prevalent energy storage method, there is potential for evaluating its applicability on a micro scale in urban areas. This study develops a multi-objective optimisation model in Python to assess the feasibility of micro pumped-storage (MPS) for high-rise buildings up to 300 meters in…

  • Traditional Chinese Medicine formula Wubi Shanyao Pills protects against reproductive aging by activating Sirt1/3 to reduce apoptosis

Open Access•Jin Xiaohu, Su Gao et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnopharmacology•2024

  • Combining the effects of industrialization and oil prices on CO 2 emissions: What role do renewable energy, urbanization and financial crisis play

    Open Access•Jianxing Chen, Wenyan Wu et al.•ARTICLE•Sustainable Development•2024•Cited by: 2•References: 2

Transitioning to a low‐carbon economy is essential for sustainable development; however, there remains a significant gap in understanding the moderating role of oil prices within the industrialization‐CO 2 emissions relationship. This study is the first to investigate how industrialization interacts with oil prices to affect CO 2 emissions across 30 African countries from 2000 to 2021, focusing on country‐specific heterogeneity. The results of Dr…

  • Seeing it both ways: Examining the role of inhibitory control in level-2 visual perspective-taking

Open Access•Meng Yuan, Ronghuan Jiang et al.•ARTICLE•Current Psychology•2023

  • Water distribution system design integrating behind-the-meter solar under long-term uncertainty

Open Access•Jiayu Yao, Wenyan Wu et al.•ARTICLE•Sustainable Cities and Society•2023

Water distribution systems (WDSs) are important urban water infrastructure supporting a wide range of human activities. Due to the significant amount of energy consumed by the WDS throughout its lifespan, the operation of WDSs may have a significant impact on the environment, affecting the sustainable development of cities into the future. Behind-the-meter (BTM) solar photovoltaic (PV) system integration has been considered an effective way to re…

  • Evaluating peer feedback as a reliable and valid complementary aid to teacher feedback in EFL writing classrooms: A feedback giver perspective

Open Access•Wenyan Wu, Jinyan Huang et al.•ARTICLE•Studies In Educational Evaluation•2022

  • Impacts of urbanization on precipitation patterns in the greater Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei metropolitan region in northern China

Open Access•Xiaomeng Song, Yuchen Mo et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2020

We present a statistical method to quantify the contribution of urbanization to precipitation changes during 1958–2017 across the greater Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei metropolitan region in northern China. We find distinct trends in precipitation in the past six decades: decreasing in annual and summer while increasing in other seasons. The spatial patterns of precipitation show discernible terrain-induced characteristics with high values in the buffer …

  • Impact of Enso on dependence between extreme rainfall and storm surge

    Open Access•Wenyan Wu, Michael Leonard•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2019

Dependence between extreme rainfall and storm surge can have significant implications for coastal floods, which are often caused by joint occurrence of these flood drivers (through pluvial or fluvial processes). The effect of multiple drivers leading to a compound flood event poses higher risk than those caused by a single flood-driving process. There is strong evidence that compound floods caused by joint occurrence of extreme storm surge and he…
