  • The Association Between Longer Maternal Leukocyte Telomere Length in the Immediate Postpartum Period and Preterm Birth in a Predominately Latina Cohort of Mothers

Open Access•Usah Dutson, Jue Lin et al.•ARTICLE•Maternal and Child Health Journal•2025

Latina mothers with moderate to late preterm infants had longer LTL in the immediate postpartum period compared to those with term infants. This association was stronger for mothers under the age of 35 years. LTL may serve as a biomarker to better understand the pathophysiology and risk of preterm birth and could inform targeted interventions for prevention and early detection. Future studies are needed to understand physiological changes in mate…

We highlight some of the important differences between American and Canadian approaches to healthy lifestyles and Aboriginal/Native health, including diet and physical activity, which may in part e…

  • Time to Consider Moving Beyond Exclusive Breastfeeding in Southern Africa

    Open Access•Janet Wojcicki, Janet M Wojcicki•ARTICLE•Children•2017

While there have been considerable advances in the reduction of mother to child transmission of HIV (MTCT) in sub-Saharan Africa with the advance of anti-retroviral therapies (ART), there remain challenges in the late postpartum period. Structural issues including food insecurity and stigma make better maternal ART adherence and exclusive breastfeeding unreachable for some women. There are no other scientifically researched feeding options as the…

  • The double burden household in sub-Saharan Africa

    Open Access•Janet M Wojcicki•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2014

There was a low prevalence of double burden households in recent data from sub-Saharan Africa. Countries that have a high prevalence of child undernutrition correspondingly have a high prevalence of adult underweight and low prevalence of adult overweight and obesity

  • "The Spanish translation of the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale and the use of the word "desgraciada

    Open Access•Janet M Wojcicki, Jillian Geissler•ARTICLE•Transcultural Psychiatry•2013•References: 5

The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), originally created in English was developed for screening postpartum women in outpatient settings as part of the 6–8 week obstetrical follow-up examination (Cox, Holden, & Sagowsky, 1987). It has been validated and used in Spanish-speaking countries including Spain (Garcia-Esteve, Ascaso, Ojuel, & Navarro, 2003), Mexico (Alvarado-Esquivel, Sifuentes-Alvarez, Salas-Martinez, & Martinez-Garcia, 2006)…

    Janet M Wojcicki, Melvin B Heyman•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2012•Cited by: 7•References: 19

The Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 presents an opportunity to change the nutritional quality of foods served in low-income childcare centers, including Head Start centers. Excessive fruit juice consumption is associated with increased risk for obesity. Moreover, there is recent scientific evidence that sucrose consumption without the corresponding fiber, as is commonly present in fruit juice, is associated with the metabolic syndrome, liver…

  • Wojcicki and Heyman Respond

    Janet M Wojcicki, Melvin B Heyman•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2012•References: 9

We appreciate the thoughtful letter from Nicklas et al. In this response, we focus on their point that any association between 100% fruit juice consumption and childhood obesity is not supported by the scientific literature. First, Nicklas et al. comment that the article we cite by Dennison et al.,1 reporting an association between excess fruit juice consumption and short stature and obesity, was conducted in a small, regional sample of children …

    Open Access•Janet M Wojcicki, Melvin B Heyman•ARTICLE•Maternal and Child Nutrition•2011

Use of nutritional labels in choosing food is associated with healthier eating habits including lower fat intake. Current public health efforts are focusing on the revamping of nutritional labels to make them easier to read and use for the consumer. The study aims to assess the frequency of use of nutritional labels and awareness of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) nutritional programmes by low-income women including those parti…

Violence against women who engage in …
