Mi Hwa Lee, Blace A Nalavany et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Work Education•2025

Photovoice has been adopted as a pedagogical tool in various social work courses. This study explored: (a) how a COVID-19 photovoice classroom project helped social work undergraduate students better understand and reflect on the effects of COVID-19, and (b) how photovoice is a useful medium for undergraduate social work education. Secondary data analysis was conducted using 162 photos and narratives from undergraduate students’ COVID-19 photovoi…

  • Adults with Dyslexia, an Invisible Disability

Blace A Nalavany, Lena W Carawan et al.•ARTICLE•The British Journal of Social Work•2015•Cited by: 1•References: 37

Living with a concealable stigmatised identity, adults with dyslexia are at risk for low self-esteem. The small but growing body of research on adults with dyslexia suggests that perceived family support has a direct influence on the self-esteem of adults with dyslexia. Understanding potential causal mechanisms underpinning the relationship between perceived family support and self-esteem is important to address the needs of this hidden populatio…

  • Adoptive Parents’ Attitudes Towards Gay and Lesbian Adoption

Paige Averett, Amy Strong-Blakeney et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of GLBT Family Studies•2011

Using a cross-sectional sample, this study examined 776 adoptive parents’ attitudes toward gay and lesbian adoption. Analysis was conducted on three subgroups: married fathers, married mothers, and single mothers. Findings include that for married fathers older age, a lower level of education, a Christian religious denomination, higher levels of religiosity, and a conservative political ideology were all factors in a more negative attitude toward…

    Lena Williams Carawan, Blace A Nalavany et al.•ARTICLE•Disability & Society•2010•Cited by: 7•References: 5

Reflexive photography for individual interviews and the use of art with focus groups provides a valuable method for exploring the psychosocial issues encountered by adults with dyslexia. Reflexive photography and art is particularly appropriate when interviewing adults with dyslexia who may have difficulty expressing and focusing on what they want to say. This article explores the potential of reflexive photography and art as an innovative method…

  • An Evaluation of Gay/Lesbian and Heterosexual Adoption

    Paige Averett, Blace A Nalavany et al.•ARTICLE•Adoption Quarterly•2009•Cited by: 11•References: 8

Many experts in the helping professions have agreed that there is no scientific credence to support a gay and lesbian adoption ban.Nevertheless, there continues to be persistent mythology pertaining to outcomes for children adopted by gay and lesbian parents. This position may be somewhat due to the dearth of research that compares heterosexual and homosexual parenting outcomes with adopted children. To respond to this gap in the literature, this s…

Objective/Method: The Sexual Abuse of Males Perceptions Scale (SAMPS) is a measure designed to assess an individual’s personal and projected social perceptions of myths about the sexual abuse of boys and men. Myths are rigid, stereotypical beliefs that invalidate the experiences and minimize the profound effects of sexual abuse on boys and men. This study establishes the initial psychometric properties for the SAMPS, based on a sample of 333 stud…

  • Adopted Children

    Scott D Ryan, Blace A Nalavany et al.•ARTICLE•Adoption Quarterly•2003•References: 3

The overwhelming majority of adoption studies have focused on adoptive parents' perceptions and feelings about post-adoption services and resources. Perhaps unintentionally, the adoption community has neglected the personal experiences of adoption told from the point of view of adopted children. This pilot study attempted to close this gap in the research literature by asking a sample of adopted children to describe their challenges vis-à-vis ado…
