The Semantic Finitism of Scientific Concepts as the Basis for the Semantics of the Concept of Science
The authors examine the foundations of the “Strong Program” (SP) in the sociology of knowledge, developed by David Bloor, and demonstrate that its four principles (causality, impartiality, symmetry, reflexivity) do not constitute its exclusive basis, since all of them, either explicitly or implicitly, had already appeared in “soft” sociological concepts, for instance, in those of Robert Merton and Max Weber. The main innovative element of the SP …
Historical Memories of Russians Today (history of the XX century Russia in the optics of families’ stories)
Referring to the data of long-term sociological research by the Federal Scientific Research Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the author studies how the historical memory in contemporary Russian society is forming under the influence of the discursive politicization of the national past. The purpose of the article is to study either the images of the recent national past that are rooted in the mass consciousness of Russians being the bas…
Student youth
Based on the results of focus groups with students of four Russian universities, the authors describe the psycho-emotional state and social position of the student youth, the range of problems that concern them, plans for the future, priority strategies for interaction with peers and the attitude towards such ideological traits as free-thinking and originality of thinking, tolerance to the uniqueness of others and following one’s own views, motiv…
Family History and Family Memory in Russia of the 2020s
The author explores how chronicle and memoirs, history and memory reconstruct the past, while simultaneously influencing each other, using the methodological division of commemorative resources. The empirical basis of the study is the data of surveys conducted by the scientific group of the Institute of Sociology of the Russian Academy of Sciences in the fall of 2020 and spring of 2022. The sociological data help the author to clarify how today, …
Scientific Rationality in the Language of Systems-communications Theory
The problem of the “experimenter’s regress” is widely discussed in the modern philosophy of science [Collins 1985]. However, it allows generalization and can be presented as a theoretical-cognitive paradox, as a philosophical-linguistic problem of reference and as a problem of philosophy of consciousness. The reliability of the functioning of “reality detectors” of any kind (devices, sensual abilities, theories, language statements or mental act…
The Evolutionary Dimension of Scientific Progress
This article considers problems that the biologically based general theory of evolution is facing today when it is extrapolated to the problem of scientific progress. It investigates how scientific theories can be interpreted as replacing each other, about what the external environment of scientific communication is, what institutions are responsible for the selection of the best theories, and the extent to which the autonomous mechanisms of scie…
The Paradox of Scientific Progress in the Evolutionary Dimension
The article proposes a solution to the paradox of scientific progress, formulated by Max Weber. Science formulates true and objective judgments, and only this distinguishes it from the world of value judgments, ideology, religion, art. On the other hand, the “lifespan of truths” is extremely small and any statement about scientific progress looks unconvincing just in comparison with the progress of value discourses, where each stage of developme…
Alexander von Humboldt
The author studies the reception of A. von Humboldt of the humanitarian problems of his time. In his works Humboldt articulated many ideas of the just social order and even of multiculturalism. But despite great interest towards the natural science of the regions he visited, the researcher avoided public judgments about social problems of these states’ residents. A. Humboldt criticized many actual social problems: aggressive cultural assimilati…

The Communicative Philosophy of Radical Protest, its Genesis and Positive Research Program
«Truth» and «authority» as Categories of Social Philosophy
The paper highlights the mutual isolation between politics (collective imperatives, normative expectations that force to take action) and science (area of cognitive expectations dependent on similarly imperative internal, though universally shared, intersubjective convictions. Particular attention is paid to the specifics of the interdependence between political development and science in Russia. The authors investigate prerequisites for the affi…
Analyzing the multiculturalism crisis in light of the systematic sociological theory
The author examines the European “multicultural fiasco” from the point of view of the systematic sociological theory. Appealing to such aspects of the sociological system theory as “self-description”, “differentiation” and “double contingency” allows explaining the underlying reasons for the intercultural dialogue fiasco, and the tragic manifestations ofEurope’s unsuccessful "wide open arms" attitude. Referring to the works of T. Parsons and N. L…
