From emergency relief to system strengthening
Guinea-Bissau, a politically fragile West African nation, relies heavily on official development assistance (ODA) to sustain reproductive, maternal, neonatal and child health (RMNCH) services. This study explored how national and international stakeholders perceive the role, evolution and effectiveness of RMNCH-related ODA and how these perspectives compare with donor strategies. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 10 key informants and …
Official Development Assistance and Private Voluntary Support for Reproductive, Maternal, Neonatal, and Child Health in Guinea-Bissau
Although variable, ODA+ for RMNCH in Guinea-Bissau has helped reduce child mortality. However, maternal and neonatal mortality require targeted interventions and improved coordination. Fluctuating aid disbursements emphasize the need for sustainable health financing and stronger donor alignment with national priorities
Characteristics of Anemia in Children Aged 6 Months to 5 Years Attending External Consultations at a Pediatric Hospital in Lisbon, Portugal
Background/Objectives: Childhood anemia remains a serious public health issue, negatively affecting cognitive and psychomotor development, with repercussions on school performance and adult productivity. This study aimed to characterize the profile of children aged 6 months to 5 years diagnosed with or at risk of anemia who attended a pediatric hospital in Lisbon, Portugal. Methods: A hospital-based, cross-sectional descriptive study was conducte…
Under-Five Mortality and Associated Risk Factors in Children Hospitalized at David Bernardino Pediatric Hospital (DBPH), Angola
Reducing under-five mortality is a crucial indicator of overall development in a country. However, in Angola, understanding the factors contributing to hospital deaths in this vulnerable demographic remains incomplete despite improvements in healthcare infrastructure and public health policies. With one of the highest under-five mortality rates in sub-Saharan Africa, Angola faces significant challenges such as malaria, malnutrition, pneumonia, ne…
Determinants of Neonatal Mortality at a Referral Paediatric Hospital in Angola
Neonatal mortality rates in developing countries are influenced by a complex array of factors. Despite advancements in healthcare, Angola has one of the highest neonatal mortality rates in sub-Saharan Africa, with significant contributors including premature birth, intrapartum events, tetanus, and sepsis. This study, utilizing key theoretical frameworks such as intersectionality, social determinants of health (SDOH), and ecosocial theory, aimed t…
Prevalence and factors related to anaemia in children aged 6–59 months attending a quaternary health facility in Maputo, Mozambique
Globally, anaemia prevails as a public health issue, being also a concern in Mozambique, where about two-thirds of children 6-59 months of age are affected by this condition. We carried out this study to estimate anaemia prevalence and evaluate structural determinants and haematological parameters association among children aged 6-59 months attending pediatric inpatient and outpatient services in a Quaternary Health Facility in Maputo City Provin…
Determinants of Late HIV Presentation at Ndlavela Health Center in Mozambique
Factors that are potentially determinant for late HIV presentation were identified. Actions are needed to focus on risk factors that are most likely to delay presentation
SLC40A1 Q248H allele frequencies and associated SLC40A1 haplotypes in three West African population samples
This study confirmed the presence of Q248H mutation at polymorphic frequencies in three native sub-Saharan populations. Analysis of two additional markers in the same gene support a single origin of the mutant allele c.744T in the haplotype background IVS1( - 24)G/(CGG)(7)
Analysis of TPI gene promoter variation in three sub‐Saharan Africa population samples
Population samples from Angola, Mozambique, and S. Tomé e Príncipe were screened for the TPI gene promoter variants -5A-->G, -8G-->A and -24T-->G. Three haplotypes were identified in the three populations: the haplotype -5A-8G-24T (average frequency 65.3%) and two less common haplotypes -5G-8G-24T (average frequency 24.7%) and -5G-8A-24T (average frequency 10.0%). A population sample from Central Portugal showed the haplotype -5A-8G-24T in 139 ch…
