Prevalence of chronic kidney disease and associated risk factors among people living with HIV in a rural population of Limpopo Province, South Africa
Background Limited evidence informs on the prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in people living with HIV (PLWH) in South Africa. Thus, this study aimed to determine the prevalence of CKD and its associated risk factors among PLWH within the rural province of Limpopo, South Africa. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional study of 143 participants, subdivided into groups of PLWH ( n = 103) and individuals without HIV ( n = 43). Structured que…
Clinical utility of novel anthropometric indices in identifying type 2 diabetes mellitus among South African adult females
The data shows that traditional and novel anthropometric indices similarly identifying newly diagnosed T2D among adult South African females. We recommend the continuing the use of traditional indices, as they are affordable and easy to use in our setting
The extent of outdoor food and beverage advertising surrounding primary and secondary schools in poorly resourced townships in Cape Town, South Africa
The results highlight a concerning level of exposure to unhealthy food and beverage advertisements around schools, particularly secondary schools in low-income townships. This could have implications for the dietary choices and health of students in these areas. The findings underscore the need for policy interventions and community awareness programs to address and regulate the advertising environment around schools, promoting healthier food and…
“ … [I] f I can [be] infected now that means I am going to die … ”: An explorative study focusing on vulnerable, immunocompromised groups and caregivers experiences and perceptions of the Covid-19 pan…
In this paper, we explored how vulnerable, immunocompromised groups and caregivers of the elderly experienced and perceived the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic in South Africa. Semi-structured interviews were conducted remotely between the 5th andthe 18th of April 2020 in the three South African provinces hardest hit by Covid-19, namely Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape. In total, 60 qualitative key informant interviews and one focus gro…
Classification of Obesity among South African Female Adolescents: Comparative Analysis of Logistic Regression and Random Forest Algorithms
The model with the highest overall performance metrics was the RF model both before balancing the data and after applying hybrid balancing. Future work would benefit from using larger datasets on adolescent female obesity to assess the robustness of the models
Association between Macronutrient and Fatty Acid Consumption and Metabolic Syndrome: A South African Taxi Driver Survey
We aimed to examine the association between macronutrient and fatty acid intake and metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its components in South African male mini-bus taxi drivers. One hundred and eighty-five ( n = 185) male taxi drivers, aged 20 years and older, who operate in the Cape Town metropole, South Africa, were included. The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) algorithm was used to define MetS. The association between macronutrient and fat…
Comparison of the Ability of Anthropometric Indices to Predict the Risk of Diabetes Mellitus in South African Males: Sanhanes-1
This study aimed to assess the sensitivity of body mass index (BMI) to predict the risk of diabetes mellitus (DM) and whether waist circumference (WC), waist-to-hip (WHR) and waist-to-height (WHtR) ratios are better predictors of the risk of DM than BMI in South African men aged 20 years and older. Data from the first South African National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (SANHANES-1) were used. Overall, 1405 men who had valid HbA1c outco…
Anaemia in Children and Adolescents: A Bibliometric Analysis of BRICS Countries (1990–2020)
The review of all scientific studies on anaemia in BRICS nations for the past 30 years revealed gaps in research collaborations on anaemia between authors in BRICS nations. However, collaborative research projects may contribute to building a shared base of evidence, innovations, data and methodologies for a more comprehensive understanding of the risks and vulnerabilities of child and adolescent anaemia. This will aid in the development and eval…
Anthropometric indices for predicting cardiovascular risk factors: Ellisras longitudinal study
The central obesity indices, WC and WHtR, are better predictors of dyslipedemia and hypercholesterolemia, whereas BMI was a better predictor of hypertension among young adults living in rural South Africa between the ages of 18 and 29 years
Association between Blood Pressure and Birth Weight among Rural South African Children: Ellisras Longitudinal Study
The aim of this cross-sectional study was to investigate the association between birth weight, underweight, and blood pressure (BP) among Ellisras rural children aged between 5 and 15 years. Data were collected from 528 respondents who participated in the Ellisras Longitudinal Study (ELS) and had their birth weight recorded on their health clinic card. Standard procedure was used to measure the anthropometric measurements and BP. Linear regressio…
