An Intersectional Examination of College and Career Readiness for Youth With and Without Disabilities
Youth with disabilities continue to experience poor post-school outcomes as compared to their peers without disabilities. In this multilevel study, we used an intersectional lens to examine college and career readiness (CCR) among youth with and without disabilities ( N = 3523). A CCR assessment yielded four domain scores: Academic Engagement and Processes, Ownership of Learning, Interpersonal Engagement, and Career Development; which were modele…
The Goal Setting Challenge App
Promoting student self-determination is recognized as the best practice in secondary transition planning. Few self-determination interventions have utilized technology to provide individualized learning opportunities. The Goal Setting Challenge (GSC) App was developed to provide a technology-based instructional approach to support developing self-determination. The purpose of this single-case study was to evaluate the impact of the GSC App on sel…
Pivotal Legislation Supporting College and Career Readiness for Students With Disabilities
Historically, students with disabilities experience less in-school preparation and postschool success compared with their peers without disabilities. U.S. federal legislation has evolved in an effort to promote successful in-school and postschool success for students with disabilities. Since 1990, legislation has emphasized the importance of postschool preparation (the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act), and more recently, the Every Stu…
Perspectives of College and Career Readiness Among Educational Stakeholders
In this study, we sought to understand the contexts, experiences, and needs among a sample of U.S. secondary education stakeholders to inform both a theoretical framework and policy contexts underpinning college and career readiness (CCR). Results confirmed a theoretically constructed framework of academic and non-academic CCR skills, with participants offering descriptions that validated and extended the framework. In addition, participants prov…
Perceptions of parents of youth with disabilities toward school-based parent engagement
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (2004) mandated schools engage parents in their child’s educational planning. Despite schools’ adoption of various strategies to promote parent engagement, parents’ perceptions about these strategies, especially among those whose children are at the secondary transition age, are often overlooked. To examine parents’ perceptions of 23 previously documented parent engagement strategies, we…
Policy and Practice Considerations to Support College and Career Readiness for Youth With Disabilities
Youth with disabilities must be college and career ready to be prepared for adult life. U.S. federal policy efforts confirm this prioritization (Every Student Succeeds Act [ESSA], 2015; Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act [IDEIA], 2004). Parallel to the emergence of college and career readiness (CCR), transition planning and service requirements have promoted successful transitions to postschool education, employment, and comm…
Secondary Education to Adult Life Transition Policy and Practice
Secondary Transition Evidence-Based Practices and Predictors
The No Child Left Behind Act (2001) and Individuals With Disabilities Education Act (IDEA, 2004) had implications for teachers and students at all levels (i.e., elementary, middle, high school). Specifically, IDEA had implications for secondary students with disabilities because it required students with disabilities exit high school prepared for postschool education, employment, and independent living. When considering federal mandates and refor…
Evidence-Based Secondary Transition Predictors for Improving Postschool Outcomes for Students With Disabilities
The purpose of this study was to conduct a systematic review of the secondary transition correlational literature to identify in-school predictors of improved postschool outcomes in the areas of education, employment, and/or independent living for students with disabilities. Based on results of this review, 16 evidence-based, in-school predictors of postschool outcomes were identified. Of the 16 predictors, 4 (25%) predicted improved outcomes in …
