  • Immersive Storytelling as a Technology, a Practice, and an Experience

Open Access•Nicholas A Bowman, Lyndsay Michalik Gratch et al.•ARTICLE•Media and Communication•2024

This thematic issue explores the transformative potential and challenges of immersive storytelling through extended technologies. While these technologies have been hailed as potential “empathy machines” that will encourage perspective-taking and understanding of others, they have also been critiqued for being distracting or engaging in identity tourism. Essays in this collection further demonstrated the complexities of extended reality storytell…

  • Understanding Expressions of Self-Determination Theory in the Evaluation of Idea-Themed VR Storytelling

Open Access•Kandice N Green, Shengjie Yao et al.•ARTICLE•Media and Communication•2024

This study investigates how prior experiences (personal or a close other’s) influence individuals’ engagement with virtual reality (VR) stories designed to promote understanding and foster prosocial behavior. Integrating self-determination theory and self–other overlap, we conducted an experimental mixed-method study with 35 participants who experienced three VR stories focused on inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility (IDEA): living wit…

  • The Irish Hills of Michigan

    Lyndsay Michalik Gratch•ARTICLE•Departures in Critical…•2018

Grounded in the Irish Hills of Michigan, this essay offers performative curation as a method to address the complexities of virtual tourist experiences, in terms of postindustrial, rural, roadside tourism and nostalgic memory. Performative curation juxtaposes tourist accounts, “official” histories, autoethnography, tall tales, dramatic scripts, descriptions of physical artifacts, images, and other texts. As a hybrid of performative writing, colla…

  • How I learned to Swede (and you can, too!): In praise of amateur aesthetics

    Lyndsay Michalik Gratch•ARTICLE•Text and Performance Quarterly•2018•Cited by: 4•References: 1

The terms sweding and sweded were first used in the film Be Kind Rewind (2008), but the impulse to adapt texts in similar ways has a much longer history in the performing arts. In this article, I combine autoethnography, film theory, and theories of parody to celebrate the amateur aesthetics of “sweded” movies – short, often parodic remakes of Hollywood movies created with little time, no money, and few resources. I explain the general rules of s…

  • Scotch & Soda

John LeBret, Lyndsay Michalik Gratch et al.•ARTICLE•Text and Performance Quarterly•2015•References: 2

Scotch & Soda was a collaborative performance, written and produced in April 2013. Inspired by the scientific principles of “carbonation” and/or “heat of solution”—both of which come into play when making a scotch and soda—this version of the script includes full and partial scenes, along with recipes for performance composition based on prompts used to create the 2013 version of the production. The recipes are invitations for further adaptation,…
