  • Shaping the future: A conceptual review of sociotechnical imaginaries

Open Access•Abe Hendriks, Kamilla Karhunmaa et al.•ARTICLE•Futures•2025

The literature around sociotechnical imaginaries has proliferated since the seminal publications of Jasanoff and Kim (2009, 2015). In this conceptual review, we examine the evolution of the concept and engagement with it across disciplines. To investigate this, we develop and analyse a corpus of 306 papers that deal with, build on or develop the concept. We provide a description of the citation trends, the journals in which papers are published, …

  • The Efficacy Paradox Revisited: "Closing Up" Commitments in Nuclear Waste Governance

    Open Access•Céline Parotte, Hadrien Macq et al.•ARTICLE•Science Technology & Human Values•2024•References: 36

It is well established in science and technology studies that participation and expert analysis should not be seen as contradictory. Key analytical questions include how both public and expert knowledge contribute to "closing down" and "opening up" appraisals and commitments, and how important these dynamics are in assessing the process and the conditions of democratizing technology. This article examines how the participatory turn has affected n…

  • Going with the Flow: Moving Cells and Changing Values in Biomedical Practice

    Open Access•P Delvenne, Hadrien Macq et al.•ARTICLE•Science Technology & Human Values•2023•Cited by: 3•References: 40

Science and technology studies have devoted considerable attention to the economic implications of biomedical technoscience. This article enriches these studies by offering a new reading of several strands of literature to explore how the valuation processes of gifts, commodities, and assets are intertwined in practice. We derive this approach from an empirical analysis of autologous blood donation in the case of a cell therapy called "extracorpo…

  • Cosmopolitan technology assessment? Lessons learned from attempts to address the deficit of technology assessment in Europe

Open Access•P Delvenne, Benedikt Rosskamp•ARTICLE•Journal of Responsible Innovation•2021

This article examines ineffective efforts to address the Technology Assessment deficit in Europe and asks how TA approaches can spread across diverse socio-political contexts while considering the specificities of receiving environments. Based on participatory observations and in-depth empirical case studies, we draw on Sheila Jasanoff's work and identify a discursive shift from an institutional deficit to a knowledge deficit of TA, co-produced w…

  • Suspended commodification: Assetization and the politics of silobolsa in Argentine soybean agriculture

    P Delvenne•ARTICLE•Journal of Cultural Economy•2021•Cited by: 7•References: 29

Based on a rich empirical description of processes of soybean commodification in Argentina, the article puts a neglected technological device at the centre of the analysis: ‘silobolsas,’ allowing farmers to conserve their harvest in plastic bags with specific properties. Storing soybeans in ‘silobolsas’ opens up the possibility of (precariously) preserving their value or holding up commercial exchanges waiting for better conditions. The politics …

  • Breaking Bad with the Participatory Turn? Accelerating Time and Intensifying Value in Participatory Experiments

    P Delvenne, Hadrien Macq•ARTICLE•Science as Culture•2019•Cited by: 10•References: 13

Science and technology studies (STS) scholars have long advocated a ‘participatory turn' in science, technology and innovation. Decisively informed by STS, participatory experiments across the world have sought to overcome the limitations of technocratic approaches and traditional innovation processes, to allow for new forms of democratic engagement. Yet the interplay between modes of participatory experiments and their wider political-economic o…

  • Flanders Ahead, Wallonia Behind (But Catching Up): Reconstructing Communities Through Science, Technology, and Innovation Policy Making

Open Access•Michiel Van Oudheusden, Nathan Charlier et al.•ARTICLE•Bulletin of Science Technology &…•2017

Drawing on a documentary analysis of two socioeconomic policy programs, one Flemish (“Vlaanderen in Actie”), the other Walloon (“Marshall Plans”), and a discourse analysis of how these programs are received in one Flemish and one Francophone quality newspaper, this article illustrates how Flanders and Wallonia both seek to become top-performing knowledge-based economies (KBEs). The article discerns a number of discursive repertoires, such as “Cat…

  • Responsible research and innovation as a travesty of technology assessment

    Open Access•P Delvenne•ARTICLE•Journal of Responsible Innovation•2017

The relation between technology assessment (TA) and responsible research and innovation (RRI) is a very topical (and controversial) issue, as TA is clearly enveloped in broader science, technology and innovation (STI) processes, such as the EU-wide shift towards RRI. In this short response to van Lente et al.’s [Van Lente, Harro, Tsjalling Swierstra, and Pierre-Benoît Joly. 2017. “Responsible Innovation as a Critique of Technology Assessment.” Jo…

  • As above, so below? Narrative salience and side effects of national innovation systems

    Frédéric Claisse, P Delvenne•ARTICLE•Critical Policy Studies•2016•Cited by: 2•References: 26

This article furthers previous attempts at integrating narratology in policy analysis. Embracing an open-ended definition of narrative, it stresses the importance of maintaining distinct narrative levels and, more generally, of taking into account the pragmatic dimension of narration as an activity, including the often-implicit role and focalization of the policy analyst. Developing a conceptual analogy between storytelling and the exercise of po…

  • Building on anticipation: Dystopia as empowerment

    Open Access•Frédéric Claisse, P Delvenne•ARTICLE•Current Sociology•2015•Cited by: 6•References: 9

A dystopia is the depiction of a dark future based on the systematic amplification of current trends and features. It relates to a complex narrative posture that relies on the critical observation of a threatening present that would lead to an apocalyptic future 'if nothing was done'. Yet, however inescapable this future may be described as, the very existence of such a narrative presupposes that the political community it tries to reach is actua…

    Open Access•Sébastien Brunet, P Delvenne et al.•ARTICLE•Sociologias•2011•References: 7
