Mapping prehistoric sailing routes to Lizard Island and beyond
Migration and exchange, as well as the circulation and diffusion of cultural, material and linguistic traits are dependent on the technical means, the environmental conditions and the human capacity to actually navigate and reach distant islands and coastal areas. Simulations of the navigational travel potential of Pacific Islanders have been undertaken in 1973 (Levison, Ward and Web) and 1992 (Irwin). However, these were lacking comprehensive wi…

Words for canoes: Continuity and change in oceanic sailing craft
This article aims to reconstruct prehistoric Oceanic canoes by analysing four technological traits and their associated lexical terms: masts (movable versus fixed), stays (fore and back running stays), steering devices (steering paddle versus steering oars) and method of coming about (shunting versus tacking). By tracing the histories of cognates and/or semantic fields related to these terms, the study demonstrates that the shunting manoeuvre was…
The Vanuatu “Butterfly Sail”: A Polynesian Oceanic Spritsail in Melanesia
The butterfly rig, an Oceanic spritsail generally used tacking in a Melanesian world dominated by the shunting Oceanic lateen, is herein examined. The author goes back to original historical and ethnographical sources, particularly those of Layard from central Vanuatu in the early twentieth century, and uses this case to investigate the development of sailing technology in Oceania. It is argued here that although this rig resembles that of the re…
An Isochrone Map of the Prehistoric Seascape around Samoa
This paper presents a new geometry of the western Pacific based on an analysis of the time necessary for canoes to sail to islands around Samoa. Using methods proposed by Francis Galton in 1866 and 1881, updated by a computer simulation of sailing trajectories, the author demonstrates the existence of a navigational threshold east of Samoa through systematic 'displacement' of islands according to sailing time in winter and summer - a threshold th…

Mapping Oceania past and present: Movements, geographies, identities
Oceania has always been a place of exchanges, of contacs and interactions, in brief of movements. In this session, we have investigated the themes of ancient migration routes through computer simulation; of modes of maritime and terrestrial representations of space; and finally of the dialectic between mobility and enrootedness over the long term and in relation to cultural or colonial hegemony. The primary objective being to question ideas of Oc…

Voyaging and basalt exchange in the Phoenix and Line archipelagoes: The Viewpoint From Three Mystery Islands
In this paper, we present evidence of long distance interaction through geochemical sourcing of basalt artifacts for some of the 'mystery islands' in the Phoenix and Line groups. We demonstrate that they were far from isolated, but in contact with Samoa, the Marquesas and perhaps the southern Cooks during the mid 12th to the mid 14th centuries. We also investigate how sailing strategies may have affected patterns of interaction through a review o…
Two old earth ovens from Nikunau Island (Republic of Kiribati)
Excavations conducted on two earth ovens from the raised reef island of Nikunau provided the oldest known dates for Kiribati. The dated material was pandanus keys indicating presence of this plant on the island at 2000 BP
Archaeobotanical investigations of an earth oven in Kiribati, Gilbert Islands
Efficiency of calcium carbonate oven stones
This paper is an attempt to better understand the use of earth ovens on atolls. A study was make linking ethnographic records of calcareous oven stones with an experiment which replicated the chemical conditions within an earth oven. It appears that calcium carbonate (CaCO3) dissociates to quicklime (CaO) during heating and hydrates to slaked lime (Ca(OH)2) during cooking. This reaction, shown to have occurred in archaeological sites, can liberat…

The discovery, in Futuna, of a fossilized taro pondfield dating from 785-1035 A.D. contributes further knowledge to the development of the domestication of plants in the Pacific. Particuliar circumstances of sedimentation allowed for the examination of taro holes and of a drainage system. These horticultural formations, which are similar to the water-logged pondfields cultivated to this day, have been around for centuries
