Infrastructure and Educational Outcomes in Bolivia
This article analyzes how the levels of enrollment, promotion, dropout and failure are affected by access to basic infrastructure services such as electricity, drinking water, and sanitation services, as well as by access to basic facilities such as classrooms, sports fields, laboratories, libraries, and computer rooms. Based on Bolivian data for the entire universe of schools and colleges at the preschool, primary, and secondary levels, an empir…
Assessing the Impact of the MAS Regime in Bolivia
This study aims to analyse the impact of the Movement towards Socialism (MAS) regime on GDP, income inequality and corruption levels. The empirical findings show that GDP has increased and corruption decreased with the MAS party in power. Income inequality, however, has tended to increase, even though average values for the Gini index during the MAS years have been lower. The difference between counterfactual and actual observations (i.e. treatme…
Prostitution in Bolivia
Perceptions about prostitution in Bolivia are analyzed through a survey conducted in February 2021. The results show that while prostitution is generally viewed as immoral, most people surveyed think that buying and selling sex should be legal. Utilizing least squares and probit regressions, we find that the principal predictors of the morality of the sex industry and on whether it should be legal are gender, attitude toward sex, rape myths, poli…
Wavering between neoliberalism and populism
A sample of economic and institutional outcomes in South American nations are analyzed for the 1990-2015 period. Qualitative analysis suggests that populist countries -Argentina, Bolivia, Ecuador, and Venezuela - have fared worse than other American nations in terms of the evolution of basic institutional indicators. Empirical findings on the determinants of political rights and civil liberties and economic growth, however, are more nuanced. Whil…
The impact of fiscal decentralization on growth, inflation and inequality in the Americas
This paper analyses the impact of fiscal decentralization on economic growth, inflation and Gini coefficients in 12 countries of the Americas. The findings suggest that the positive impact of this process has been more modest than anticipated, with revenue decentralization having a detrimental effect on economic growth and expenditure decentralization a positive one in developing nations of the Americas. Regarding the impact on income inequality,…
Crowding Out Private Investment in Bolivia
This article analyzes whether public investment has crowded out private investment in Bolivia during the 1988–2010 period. The evidence demonstrates that this is generally the case, as public investment has been shown to consistently run counterclockwise to private investment. Interestingly, the quality of the institutional setting and the openness of the economy to trade with other nations do not seem to matter to the relation between public inv…
Final years of the silver standard in Mexico
This paper focuses on the use of silver as a monetary standard in Mexico during approximately the last three decades of the nineteenth century and the first decade of the twentieth century. During this period, several events occurred in the market for silver that affected those countries attached to this metal. These events caused some of these countries to abandon silver for good and adopt other types of monetary arrangements. Mexico and a few o…
Evidence of Purchasing Power Parity in Silver‐backed Mexico and India
This paper examines whether the theory of purchasing power parity (PPP) existed between Mexico and India for the period 1886–1910. It finds that despite not having a known trade relationship, PPP did hold. The explanation lies in the fact that these very different countries adhered to the silver standard far longer than most others – India through to 1893 and Mexico until 1905. The economic consequences of this adherence exposed both countries to…
