Farmers’ futures
In Finland, agriculture is practiced in variable growing conditions that are further challenged by climate change and under external pressure caused by international competition, changing consumer preferences and demands, and the renewal of the European Union Common Agriculture Policy and Paris Agreement climate targets. Futures studies in agriculture have focused on scenario building with expert panels, though usually without farmers’ involvemen…
Harmonization potential of the fragmented farmlands in Finland
Agricultural landscapes have been shaped by gradual, partially optimized changes in farms and surrounding areas which have resulted in fragmented agricultural landownership and increased distances on farms. Since Finland joined the EU in 1995, the average farm size has more than doubled which has increased the distances on farms. This may have caused trade-offs with resource use efficiency, productivity, and sustainability. The aim of this study …
Value priorities of the Finnish farmers—Time to stop thinking of farmers as inherently conservative and traditional
Farming communities are becoming more heterogeneous and multifunctional due to various structural and environmental changes. However, it is not known if farmers' values have also become more heterogeneous. We wanted to explore potential heterogeneity in farmers' value priorities in detail across different farmer groups in Finland using the refined Schwartz theory of 19 basic human values. A representative sample of 4,401 Finnish farmers responded…
Evaluation of policy instruments for supporting greenhouse gas mitigation efforts in agricultural and urban land use
Land use optimization tool for sustainable intensification of high-latitude agricultural systems
Recent studies assessing agricultural policies, including the EU’s Agri-Environment Scheme, have shown that these have been successful in attaining some environmental goals. In Finland, however, the economic situation of farms has dramatically fallen and hence, the actions do not result in social acceptability. Sustainable intensification is a means to combine the three dimensions of sustainability: environmental, economic and social. Here we int…
Field characteristics driving farm-scale decision-making on land allocation to primary crops in high latitude conditions
Stakeholder perspectives for switching from rainfed to irrigated cropping systems at high latitudes
Static yields and quality issues
Impacts and adaptation options of climate change on ecosystem services in Finland
Impacts and adaptation of European crop production systems to climate change
