Reducing posttraumatic stress disorder symptom severity among depressed women with childhood sexual abuse histories in interpersonal psychotherapy-trauma
Findings support that a non-exposure-based therapy can reduce PTSD symptoms via improved social functioning. Given extensive literature showing the importance of social functioning in mental health generally and PTSD specifically, integrating a focus on social functioning (e.g., building social skills, expanding support networks) into treatments, including exposure-based treatments, may enhance outcomes. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2024 APA, al…
Mindfulness-based stress reduction to enhance psychological functioning and improve inflammatory biomarkers in trauma-exposed women
This study examined the effects of a mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) program on psychological functioning and inflammatory biomarkers in women with histories of interpersonal trauma. The 8-week MBSR program was conducted at a community-based health center and participants (N = 50) completed several measures of psychological functioning at study entry as well as 4 weeks, 8 weeks, and 12 weeks later. Inflammatory biomarkers were assayed f…
Interpersonal psychotherapy for depressed women with histories of intimate partner violence
Intimate partner violence (IPV) and depression are significant public health problems, yet there are no empirically tested treatments for community-based, clinically depressed women with IPV histories. This uncontrolled pilot study examined the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary benefits of a community-based administration of brief, group interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) for depressed women with lifetime histories of IPV (IPT for IPV) t…
Depressive and Posttraumatic Symptoms Among Women Seeking Protection Orders Against Intimate Partners
This investigation examined the relationship of abuse-specific coping strategies and perceived responses to abuse disclosure to symptoms of depression and posttraumatic stress among 131 women seeking a protection order against an intimate partner. Disengagement, denial, and self-blame coping strategies, as well as blaming of the participant by others, were associated with greater depressive and posttraumatic symptoms. None of the strategies of co…

Concomitant Forms of Abuse and Help-Seeking Behavior Among White, African American, and Latina Women Who Experience Intimate Partner Violence
This study uses National Violence against Women Survey data to investigate the differential impact of concomitant forms of violence (sexual abuse, stalking, and psychological abuse) and ethnicity on help-seeking behaviors of women physically abused by an intimate partner (n = 1,756). Controlling for severity of the physical abuse, women who experienced concomitant sexual abuse are less likely to seek help, women who experienced concomitant stalki…
Childhood Sexual Abuse is Associated With Physical Illness Burden and Functioning in Psychiatric Patients 50 Years of Age and Older
Objective: To examine the association of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) with cumulative illness burden, physical function, and bodily pain (BP) in a sample of male and female psychiatric patients ≥50 years of age. Previous research on the health consequences of sexual abuse has focused on nonpsychiatric samples of younger-age adults, especially women. The health implications of abuse for mixed-gender samples of older psychiatric patients have not b…
History of Sudden Unexpected Loss Is Associated With Elevated Interleukin-6 and Decreased Insulin-Like Growth Factor-1 in Women in an Urban Primary Care Setting
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the hypothesis that a history of sudden unexpected loss including number of losses and type of loss (death due to unnatural versus natural causes) would be associated with the magnitude of dysregulation. The sudden unexpected death of a loved one confers risk of morbidity and mortality, perhaps due to dysregulation in the immune/inflammatory and endocrine systems. METHODS: Female primary care patients aged >or=40 years (…
