  • Why Stay? Local Opportunity Anchoring and Gendered Immobility in Peri‐Urban China

Open Access•Hongwei Yu, Yufeng Hou•ARTICLE•Population Space and Place•2026

Why women remain in split households cannot be inferred from residence alone: staying may be desired, accepted, or constrained. Drawing on two interview rounds a year apart and later online follow‐up with 10 women in a peri‐urban Yunnan village whose partners worked elsewhere, this article examines how staying was sustained as local tourism contracted. Six sustained employment‐based staying through other local jobs; three remained through care, s…

  • Development and explanation of electrocardiogram-based deep learning for predicting short-term mortality in heart failure patients

Open Access•Yan Li, Lixia Cheng et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Global Health•2026

Background: Heart failure mortality has risen sharply after years of decline, highlighting the limitations of current risk assessment tools in accuracy, complexity, and cost, and the need for improved predictive models. To address this gap, we developed and validated a deep learning model to improve short-term mortality prediction in heart failure patients. Methods: In this retrospective study, we leveraged the Medical Information Mart for Intens…

  • Epidemiological and laboratory characteristics of Omicron infection in a general hospital in Guangzhou

Open Access•J Chen, Yang Wang et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2023

The COVID-19 pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2 has emerged as a major global public health concern. In November 2022, Guangzhou experienced a significant outbreak of Omicron. This study presents detailed epidemiological and laboratory data on Omicron infection in a general hospital in Guangzhou between December 1, 2022, and January 31, 2023. Out of the 55,296 individuals tested, 12,346 were found to be positive for Omicron. The highest prevalence of …

  • The Impact of Economic Policy Uncertainty on Regional Total-Factor Energy Productivity in China

Open Access•Bin Wang, Chenyang Meng et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023

This paper investigates the effect and possible mechanism of implicit macroeconomic policy uncertainty on regional energy productivity in China. This study takes the unexpected output of environmental pollution from energy consumption into account and uses the DEA-SBM method to measure the regional total-factor energy productivity (RTFEP) of prefecture cities in China from 2003 to 2017. Based on the economic policy uncertainty (EPU) index constru…

  • A longitudinal examination

Hongwei Yu, E Michael Bohlig et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Higher Education•2023

A considerable number of studies have investigated the relationship between part-time faculty employment and student academic achievement, such as credential completion. However, most studies used cross-sectional data, making it difficult to properly assess the changes in this relationship. In this study, we drew longitudinal data from IPEDS, and linear and quadratic growth models to understand the dynamic relationship between part-time faculty a…

  • Do Community College Students Benefit from Federal Work-Study Participation

Open Access•Hongwei Yu, Lyle McKinney et al.•ARTICLE•Teachers College Record The Voice…•2020

Background Prior studies suggest that Federal Work-Study (FWS) participation is positively associated with student learning, persistence, and academic achievement at four-year institutions. Limited research, however, has evaluated whether FWS participation improves academic success among students attending community colleges. Purpose and Research Questions The purpose of this study was to determine whether and how FWS participation impacted acade…

  • The association between religion and self-reported academic honesty among college students

Hongwei Yu, Yu Hongwei et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Beliefs and Values•2017

Current research yields inconsistent findings about the association between religious variables and academic cheating among college students. In this study, we investigated possible reasons for this disagreement by examining whether, and to what extent, three particular religious variables: religious identity, affirmation of importance and religious services attendance, are associated with academic honesty among college students. Specifically, we…

  • Understanding the divergence of manufacturing enterprisesʼ profitability in China

Hongwei Yu, Chen Wen-jin et al.•ARTICLE•China Economic Journal•2017

The transition of the Chinese economy is placing increasing pressure on manufacturing enterprises to become more profitable. In this article, we first calculate and analyze the profitability of Chinese manufacturing enterprises based on data from the 2015 Chinese Enterprises–Employees Survey (CEES 2015), and find that there is an obvious profitability divergence tendency of manufacturing enterprises. We then analyze the different actions and stra…
