  • Respiratory and Cardiovascular Medical Emergency Calls Related to Indoor Heat Exposure through a Case–Control Study in New York City

Open Access•Elaina Gonsoroski, James Tamerius et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Urban Health•2025

  • Environment and Disease

    Open Access•James Tamerius, James D Tamerius•CHAPTER•International Encyclopedia of…•2017

Environmental factors and systems mediate exposures to various physical, chemical, and biological factors that cause disease. Indeed, the environment has a significant role in many major disease systems worldwide, such as lower respiratory diseases, diarrheal diseases, and vector‐borne disease. Environmental variability is one of many factors that can affect the spatial and temporal distribution of disease. However, the relationships between the …

  • Precipitation Effects on Motor Vehicle Crashes Vary by Space, Time, and Environmental Conditions

James Tamerius, J D Tamerius et al.•ARTICLE•Weather, Climate, and Society•2016

Numerous studies have shown that precipitation has a significant impact on motor vehicle crashes. Hourly weather radar data with a 4-km resolution and over 600 000 crashes from 2002 to 2012 in Iowa are used to assess the effects of precipitation on motor vehicle crashes. Using a matched pairs analysis, this study finds that the relative accident risk (RAR) across the state during the study period was 1.69 [1.66, 1.71]. However, RAR increased to a…

  • Socioeconomic and Outdoor Meteorological Determinants of Indoor Temperature and Humidity in New York City Dwellings

James Tamerius, J D Tamerius et al.•ARTICLE•Weather, Climate, and Society•2013

Numerous mechanisms link outdoor weather and climate conditions to human health. It is likely that many health conditions are more directly affected by indoor rather than outdoor conditions. Yet, the relationship between indoor temperature and humidity conditions to outdoor variability, and the heterogeneity of the relationship among different indoor environments are largely unknown. The authors use 5–14-day measures of indoor temperature and rel…
