Environmental factors and systems mediate exposures to various physical, chemical, and biological factors that cause disease. Indeed, the environment has a significant role in many major disease systems worldwide, such as lower respiratory diseases, diarrheal diseases, and vector‐borne disease. Environmental variability is one of many factors that can affect the spatial and temporal distribution of disease. However, the relationships between the environment and disease are strongly modulated by social, political, and economic factors. Understanding the role of the environment in disease is critical for mitigating the burden of disease.
