Ostatni Żydzi Polski” czy ostatnia lewica po polsku? Wokół książki Davida Kowalskiego „Polens letzte Juden. Herkunft und Dissidenz um 1968”
In his PhD thesis entitled Polens letzte Juden: Herkunft und Dissidenz um 1968 [Poland’s Last Jews: Descent and Dissidence around 1968], which was published in 2018, David Kowalski analyses “the relation between the milieu of descent” – in the sociological sense – and “oppositional activity”. The milieu in question refers to the students in post-war Poland who were part of the Club of the Seekers of Contradictions (Klub Poszukiwaczy Sprzeczności)…
Établir la vérité sur le meurtre des Juifs en Pologne
The foundations for research on the Shoah were laid by Jewish survivor scholars in the immediate aftermath of liberation from German occupation. In his book, The Yiddish Historians and the Struggle for Jewish History, Mark Smith identifies Nachman Blumental (1902–1983), who survived the Shoah in the Soviet Union, as one of these Yiddish historians. While Blumental was indeed a Yiddish historian and a Yiddishist, he was much more. Blumental was al…
The Jewish Historical Institute and the 1968 antisemitic campaign in Poland
This article analyzes the relentless attacks on the Jewish Historical Institute (Żydowski Instytut Historyczny; ŻIH) in Warsaw in 1967–1968 against the background of two narratives. The first narrative, focusing on the murder of Jews during the German occupation by Polish antisemites, was utilized by German revisionists connected with the Göttinger Arbeitskreis in order to assuage German guilt for the Holocaust. It operated in a manipulative mann…
Leo Lowenthal’s Legacy
The interview is concerned with the legacy of Leo Lowenthal (1900–1993), who was born into a Jewish family in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. Lowenthal belonged to the first generation of Critical Theorists under Max Horkheimer’s directorship at the University of Frankfurt Institute for Social Research. Taking Lowenthal’s understanding of Critical Theory as their point of departure, the interlocutors – Katrin Stoll and Martin Jay – discuss ways of re…
Decommunisation – Fascism without Fascists
Are there fascizizing ways to look at public space and aesthetics? If so, how do they manifest themselves? What characterizes the fascization of space? How and where can you recognize it? How do architecture and symbols in public space contribute to fascization of daily life? One of them is a policy of cleansing and rhetoric about recovering after an imaginary foreign domination or invasion. The aim of this conversation is to elucidate the concep…
Beyond Conceptions of Fascism and Fascist Conceptions
In discussing conceptions and definitions of fascism, this text offers a new and broader perspective on the phenomenon by introducing the concept of fascization as an analytical tool. Given the fact that the conditions that fascism produced have not been destroyed, its elements have not been delegitimized and that the fascist imagination still exists in European and non-European societies, the author argues that we need a new category connecting …
Producing an Antisemitic Consensus within the Framework of the “Judenjagd”
This article – which is based on the records of Nachman Blumental that I discovered as part of my work on his archive material and that I brought to light, as well as on the documentation of two official investigations – deals with the complicity of Poles – uniformed (the policja granatowa, or Blue Police) and civilians – in the Nazi project to kill every Jew without exception in Dębica County during the German occupation. I analyze the mechanism…

The author lays bare and deconstructs these mechanisms – above all the mechanisms of narrative fetishism of production …

Transcending the divide between history and memory
This article deals with Szymon Datner's narratives of the Holocaust in Białystok and its surroundings, which he produced in the aftermath of liberation from German occupation (from 1944 onwards). Datner (1902–89) survived the Białystok ghetto from where he escaped in June 1943 to become a partisan fighter. His family was murdered by the Germans. In his capacity as chairman of the Białystok Jewish Committee and as a member of the Jewish Historical…
The Lack of Conscious Engagement with the Reality of the Holocaust or
In my essay, I argue that because German public remembrance, which has a selfserving and instrumental undercurrent to it, is mostly concerned with perpetrators and victims, the questions of how German society played its part in Nazi crimes and why there was nobody among German diplomats who acted like the Polish diplomat Jan Karski have not been sufficiently addressed. I demonstrate why Karski represents a model for an ethical engagement with the…
