  • Indigenous perspectives on breaking bad news

Shemana Cassim, J Kidd et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Medical Ethics•2021

Most healthcare providers (HCPs) work from ethical principles based on a Western model of practice that may not adhere to the cultural values intrinsic to Indigenous peoples. Breaking bad news (BBN) is an important topic of ethical concern in health research. While much has been documented on BBN globally, the ethical implications of receiving bad news, from an Indigenous patient perspective in particular, is an area that requires further inquiry…

  • Acute Tryptophan Depletion Moja-De

Open Access•Richard M Stewart, Janice Wong et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2020

Serotonin (5-HT) is widely implicated as a key neurotransmitter relevant to a range of psychiatric disorders and psychological processes. The role of central nervous 5-HT function underlying these processes can be examined through serotonergic challenge methodologies. Acute tryptophan depletion (ATD) is a key challenge method whereby a diminished dietary intake of tryptophan-the amino acid precursor to brain 5-HT synthesis-results in temporary di…

  • The rise of defensive engineering

Jan Hayes, Sarah Maslen et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Risk Research•2017•References: 1

Based on a survey of Australian engineers (n = 275) this paper examines the impact of personal liability considerations on engineering decision-making. Almost all respondents who make high-stakes decisions saw questions of liability as having both positive (90%) and negative (87%) impacts. Our analysis shows that awareness of personal liability acts to focus the attention of many engineers on the moral dimension of their work. However, it also en…

  • Involvement of low- and middle-income countries in randomized controlled trial publications in oncology

Open Access•Janice Wong, Janice C Wong et al.•ARTICLE•Globalization and Health•2014

BACKGROUND: We describe trends in participation by investigators from low- and middle-income countries (LMCs) in publications describing oncology randomized control trials (RCTs) over a decade. METHODS: We used Medline to identify RCTs published in English from 1998 to 2008 evaluating treatment in lung, breast, colorectal, stomach and liver cancers. Data on author affiliations, authorship roles, trial characteristics, funding and interventions we…
