  • The Concentration of Personal Names in Late Medieval Florence

    Open Access•Stefano Ciliberti•ARTICLE•Names•2026

This study applies quantitative methods to explore the evolution of personal names in late medieval Florence. Using large historical datasets—including the “Libro di Montaperti” (1260), the “Catasto” (1427), and the “Tratte” (1282–1532)—I examine how the concentration of personal names changed over time. After assessing several possible indicators of diversification, I show that many are affected by finite-size effects and selection bias, which c…

  • On the Life Cycle of Empires

    Open Access•Stefano Ciliberti•ARTICLE•Cliodynamics The Journal of…•2025

We provide empirical evidence that the distribution of empires' lifetime is exponential with a typical time-scale of 300 years. After introducing and computing a proxy measure for the dimension of a large polity we interpret the data by means of a simple dynamical model for the empires' evolution. The resulting theory suggests that the behavior of a long-lived empire is qualitatively different from a short-lived one. They all experience an initia…

  • Farmer preferences regarding durum wheat contracts in Italy

Open Access•Gustavo Magalhães De Oliveira, Gaetano Martino et al.•ARTICLE•British Food Journal•2021

Purpose This study aims to investigate farmer preferences regarding sales contracts for durum wheat in Italy. Design/methodology/approach The authors consider that contracts are formed by an organisational entity that is in charge of transferring decision and property rights based on reductions in transaction costs. The empirical analysis presents a discrete choice experiment with three distinct models that was performed by a survey of 160 wheat …
