Vacuous interlocutors as hieratic proxies in the sacrosphere of Andalusian flamenco saeta
Saeta (Spanish: ‘arrow’) is nowadays identified as a religious modality of flamenco singing, performed during Holy Week celebrations. The textual fabric of a saeta comprises both melody, manner of singing, and verbal texts, as well as the inherent spatiality of a communicative act. Due to the multifaceted nature of this cultural phenomenon, the semiotic perspective is optimal to capture “a psychosocial connection” through investigated signage. In…

Modality in Spanish Sign Language (LSE) revisited
This paper provides an analysis of modality in Spanish Sign Language (Lengua de Signos Española: LSE) from a functional perspective. Following FDG assumptions, scope will be the basic criterion in delineating modal subtypes. Four representational layers are taken into account: Propositional Content, Episode, State-of-Affairs, and Configurational Property. This study highlights that LSE offers an extensive sample of manual items (with a variable d…
Degree words, intensification, and word class distinctions in Romance languages
This paper emphasises the explanatory possibilities of a parts-of-speech theory in which the notions of differentiation , flexibility , and rigidity are not perceived as mutually exclusive typological paths, but as potentially compatible grammatical strategies. The type of analysis such a theory makes possible is first applied to Spanish quantifiers and subsequently extended to degree words expressing intensification in modern Romance languages. …
