Plenary Panel — Transformations — March 30, 2019
The plenary session on the afternoon of the conference was an intergenerational, gender-diverse panel with ages that spanned 60 years. These included our two youth members Esme and Bryce, as well as Julien Loreno, Kim Watson, Pauline Park, PhD, and Jameson Green, PhD. Our intention was to explore how one feels and understands one’s gender internally and within different social contexts. It was also a discussion of how context and life span effect…
Gender Is a Complex Number and the Case for Trans Phantoms
Gender is not only a spectrum; it is a complex number. Each individual has their own unique multidimensional number of gender. Gender as a complex number has developed from the gender algorithm. This conceptualization of gender is seated in theorizing gender from a Bayesian brain foundation, specifically the Free Energy Principle. The phenomenon of phantoms in transgender, transsexual, and nonbinary (TGNB) people has only recently been a subject …
Integration of desire, sexual orientation, and female embodiment of a transgender woman previously diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder
This article explores the relationship between ASD characteristics and gender identity in a transgender female adult psychotherapy patient and the implications of these on her self-narrative and self-identity, including changes in sexual orientation and gender expression. We examine the nuanced relationship between ASD, exploration of gender identity and expression, early transition, and subsequent increase in sexual desire and shift in sexual or…
Trans Bodies and the Failure of Mirrors
This project applies and expands Gallagher’s (2005) theories concerning body image and body schema to the concept of gender in general and in particular how understanding gender through this lens can be used to aid transgender people in understanding their own gender. In addition, the paper discusses the effects of gender-incongruent mirroring for transgender and gender nonconforming persons’ ability to know their own feelings and its role in the…
Our Body Project
As much as one may attempt to determine the gender of one's psyche, something will always be lacking, something will be left to reckon with, specifically, the body's deception of the psychic body image. The mourning of one's body for a trans* person may follow a unique path but it shares the universal human experience of self-acceptance. A person must come to feel the body in order to accept that aspects of the physical body do not match the pers…
Gender (Dis)Agreement
In order for one to fully express oneself and symbolize one's experience in psychotherapy, one requires language which will fit that experience. Individuals living outside the gender binary are forced to use language and grammar which resists acknowledging their existence and experience. This paper will focus on theoretical and clinical implications of present language barriers to expressing a gender-nonconforming life in treatment as well as the…
