Mapping Platform-Mediated Proximities With the TikTok Global Observatory
Considering TikTok’s increasing geopolitical influence, this article presents the TikTok Global Observatory (TKGO) as a case of data-reappropriation and introduces the concept of platform-mediated proximity as a counter-data mapping framework for data activist research. While TikTok enables global connection beyond local and cultural boundaries, its content is sensitive to locally specific conditions to which the platform provides no public insig…
The Dark Side of LLM-Powered Chatbots: Misinformation, Biases, Content Moderation Challenges in Political Information Retrieval
This study investigates the impact of Large Language Model (LLM)-based chatbots, specifically in the context of political information retrieval, using the 2024 Taiwan presidential election as a case study. With the rapid integration of LLMs into search engines like Google and Microsoft Bing, concerns about information quality, algorithmic gatekeeping, biases, and content moderation emerged. This research aims to (1) assess the alignment of AI cha…
AI chatbot accountability in the age of algorithmic gatekeeping: Comparing generative search engine political information retrieval across five languages
This study investigates the performance of search engine chatbots powered by large language models in generative political information retrieval. Applying algorithmic accountability as a central theme, this research (a) assesses the alignment of artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot responses with timely political information, (b) investigates the factual correctness and transparency of chatbot-sourced synopses, (c) examines the adherence of chatb…
The Impact of Tiktok Policies on Information Flows During Times of War: Evidence of ‘Splinternet’ and ‘Shadow-Promotion’ in Russia
This research discusses how TikTok’s adaptation to Russian war censorship laws after the invasion of Ukraine affected content accessibility and prioritization on the platform. The study uses a combination of scraping and sock-puppet algorithmic audits to understand the impact of platform policy on information flows during times of war. The first test found that TikTok restricted access to non-Russian content in Russia, resulting in a 95% reductio…
The World According to Tiktok: An Observatory on Cross-National Content Prioritization and Platform-Mediated Proximities
The present paper showcases a research tool that makes data for a global, cross-national analysis of TikTok available to and navigable by the research community. Next to justifying the necessity for this approach and providing an overview of to the tool, the paper illustrates its potential by presenting the analysis of a dataset comprised of daily snapshots of TikTok’s homepage collected over 4 months from 197 countries and territories in the wor…
Compositional Data Analysis of 16S rRNA Gene Sequencing Results from Hospital Airborne Microbiome Samples
The compositional analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequencing datasets is applied to characterize the bacterial structure of airborne samples collected in different locations of a hospital infection disease department hosting COVID-19 patients, as well as to investigate the relationships among bacterial taxa at the genus and species level. The exploration of the centered log-ratio transformed data by the principal component analysis via the singular val…
Pollen Monitoring by Optical Microscopy and DNA Metabarcoding: Comparative Study and New Insights
Environmental samples collected in Brindisi (Italy) by a Hirst-type trap and in Lecce (Italy) by a PM10 sampler were analysed by optical microscopy and DNA-metabarcoding, respectively, to identify airborne pollen and perform an exploratory study, highlighting the benefits and limits of both sampling/detection systems. The Hirst-type trap/optical-microscopy system allowed detecting pollen on average over the full bloom season, since whole pollen g…
The platformization of gender and sexual identities: An algorithmic analysis of Pornhub
Online pornography, like other forms of cultural production, is increasingly subject to processes of platformization. While research has focused on the diffusion of online pornography and its broader implications, less attention has been paid to the algorithmic infrastructures through which platforms distribute and manage pornographic content, and how this might reiterate socially embedded views and perspectives. To fill this gap, we consider how…
