Strong increase in mortality attributable to ozone pollution under a climate change and demographic scenario
Long-term exposure to ambient ozone (O 3 ) is associated with excess respiratory mortality. Pollution emissions, demographic, and climate changes are expected to drive future ozone-related mortality. Here, we assess global mortality attributable to ozone according to an Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Shared Socioeconomic Pathway (SSP) scenario applied in Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) models, projecting a …
Required knowledge for clean cooking transition
In sub-Saharan Africa, four out of five people use biomass fuels for household energy, with associated health and environmental problems. Interventions for clean cooking transitions tend to simplify agency and adoption motivations, with knowledge gaps in policy design. Drawing perspectives from own research from Tanzania, we focus on four key dimensions: household energy needs, climate, health, and the policy context. Six recommendations are high…
Health and economic impact of air pollution in the states of India
BACKGROUND: The association of air pollution with multiple adverse health outcomes is becoming well established, but its negative economic impact is less well appreciated. It is important to elucidate this impact for the states of India. METHODS: We estimated exposure to ambient particulate matter pollution, household air pollution, and ambient ozone pollution, and their attributable deaths and disability-adjusted life-years in every state of Ind…
Global and national assessment of the incidence of asthma in children and adolescents from major sources of ambient NO 2
Pediatric asthma incidence has been associated with exposure to nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) in ambient air. NO 2 is predominantly emitted through fossil fuel use in land transportation, power generation and the burning of solid biofuels in households. We simulated NO 2 with a global atmospheric chemistry model, combined with a land use regression model, to estimate NO 2 exposure in all countries worldwide. The global asthma incidence among children …
Mobility in Blue-Green Spaces Does Not Predict Covid-19 Transmission
Mobility restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic ostensibly prevented the public from transmitting the disease in public places, but they also hampered outdoor recreation, despite the importance of blue-green spaces (e.g., parks and natural areas) for physical and mental health. We assess whether restrictions on human movement, particularly in blue-green spaces, affected the transmission of COVID-19. Our assessment uses a spatially resolved dat…

Covid-19 lockdowns cause global air pollution declines
The lockdown response to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has caused an unprecedented reduction in global economic and transport activity. We test the hypothesis that this has reduced tropospheric and ground-level air pollution concentrations, using satellite data and a network of >10,000 air quality stations. After accounting for the effects of meteorological variability, we find declines in the population-weighted concentration of ground-lev…
Anticipating the Novel Coronavirus Disease (Covid-19) Pandemic
The COVID-19 outbreak was first declared an international public health, and it was later deemed a pandemic. In most countries, the COVID-19 incidence curve rises sharply over a short period of time, suggesting a transition from a disease-free (or low-burden disease) equilibrium state to a sustained infected (or high-burden disease) state. Such a transition is often known to exhibit characteristics of "critical slowing down." Critical slowing dow…
Changing risk factors that contribute to premature mortality from ambient air pollution between 2000 and 2015
Exposure to ambient air pollution is a major global health risk factor. Using recently updated hazard ratio functions, we estimate that the global premature mortality burden attributable to ambient PM 2.5 and O 3 exposure increased by about 30% and 17%, respectively, from 2000 to 2015. We analyzed these trends in terms of tradeoffs between changes in baseline mortality, population size, age distribution and exposure. Global population growth alon…
The impact of air pollution on deaths, disease burden, and life expectancy across the states of India
Background Air pollution is a major planetary health risk, with India estimated to have some of the worst levels globally. To inform action at subnational levels in India, we estimated the exposure to air pollution and its impact on deaths, disease burden, and life expectancy in every state of India in 2017. Methods We estimated exposure to air pollution, including ambient particulate matter pollution, defined as the annual average gridded concen…
