Challenging the work-ready paradigm
The research detailed in this article describes the challenges facing two academic writing tutors (AWTs) asked to improve the writing practices of undergraduate engineering students. The engineering lecturers wanted a focus on the kinds of writing their students would need when they entered the industry. The tutors had no background or expertise in the field and the lecturers were clear that they had limited contact with their professional collea…
A mixed-method inquiry into Arabic-speaking students’ experiences with English academic writing at the undergraduate level
The challenges facing non-native English-speaking students (NNESSs) in adapting to the conventions of academic writing at the tertiary level in English-medium institutions have been widely canvassed in scholarly research. Employing a cross-generational perspective, this study attempts to deepen our understanding of the politeness strategies Saudi females use when responding to compliments in English from an English speaker. The study investigated how Saudi females from two generations respond to compliments in an educational setting in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). Participants included sixty-two female undergraduate students and sixty-four female lecturers f…

Our university hosts a diverse student cohort and, in certain discipline areas, international students and domestic students whose first language is not English outnumber their English-speaking peers. On the whole, group projects with these cohorts are challenging, and in particular, the allocation of marks is fraught with difficulty. Awarding the same mark to all group members is often viewed as unfair, and resented by those who feel either disa…
I know the type of people I work well with
Research indicates that the uncertainty created when students are required to work in groups for assessed projects induces anxiety, which can manifest itself both cognitively and affectively. Such anxiety may influence student attitudes towards the selection and formation of the groups. This study explored whether different methods of group formation impact on student anxiety levels and, in addition, whether the home language of the students is a…
