Respecting and Protecting Cultural Values in an Indigenous Virtual Reality Project
Co-design and development of technology with indigenous communities requires respect and close partnership. Here, we reflect on our experiences working with a Māori (indigenous New Zealand) community as Pākehā textasciimacron (non-Māori). 1 In particular, we consider the importance of protection as an underlying principle. We believe that our experiences can inform other researchers and practitioners in respecting and protecting cultural values i…
Ātea Presence— Enabling Virtual Storytelling, Presence, and Tele-Co-Presence in an Indigenous Setting
Developing, evaluating, and disseminating IT research prototypes for and with indigenous partners is both challenging and rewarding. In conjunction with our domain expert collaborators, Te Rau Aroha Marae [Bluff, Aotearoa/New Zealand (NZ)] and our academic colleagues at the Universities of Waikato and Canterbury, we are implementing a mixed reality telepresence system to connect a diasporic Māori community to their historical, cultural, and geogr…

RWAc and SDOc
Right‐wing authoritarianism (RWA) and social dominance orientation (SDO) predict prejudice and discrimination in adults. To create analogous scales for children, we carried out four studies. First, we gave 112 adults from New Zealand (Study 1) and 146 adults from Turkey (Study 2) novel child‐appropriate measures of RWA and SDO, along with the standard adult measures. The two RWA measures correlated more highly with each other than with the SDO me…
The Experience of Presence
Within an embodied cognition framework, it is argued that presence in a virtual environment (VE) develops from the construction of a spatial-functional mental model of the VE. Two cognitive processes lead to this model: the representation of bodily actions as possible actions in the VE, and the suppression of incompatible sensory input. It is hypothesized that the conscious sense of presence reflects these two components as spatial presence and i…
