Assessing terrestrial vertebrates as potential biodiversity indicators of ecosystem services in multifunctional landscapes
Combining ecosystem services and biodiversity conservation is critical for evaluating the benefits of nature to society. However, research gaps have led to a conservation dilemma in determining which biodiversity groups should be selected in ecosystem service assessments. To contribute to the ongoing debate on the role of biodiversity in supporting ecosystem services, we assess the performance of terrestrial vertebrates as biodiversity indicators…
Satellite-based Machine Learning modelling of Ecosystem Services indicators
Satellite-based Machine Learning (ML) modelling has emerged as a powerful tool to understand and quantify spatial relationships between landscape dynamics, biophysical variables and natural stocks. Ecosystem Services indicators (ESi) provide qualitative and quantitative information aiding the assessment of ecosystems’ status. Through a systematic meta-analysis following the PRISMA guidelines, studies from one decade (2012–2022) were analyzed and …
Detection of discrepancies between nautical charts and new survey data using GIS techniques
Nautical charts are critical for safe navigation as long as they remain updated and trustworthy for the reality they depict. The increase in marine traffic and the growth of available data require that the process of assessing nautical chart adequacy, which consists of comparing information from a new survey with the one published in the ruling cartography, be both fast and effective. In this sense, this work aims to automate the detection of dis…
Modelling Sediment Retention Services and Soil Erosion Changes in Portugal
Soils provide important regulating ecosystem services and have crucial implications for human well-being and environmental conservation. However, soil degradation and particularly soil erosion jeopardize the maintenance and existence of these services. This study explores the spatio–temporal relationships of soil erosion to understand the distribution patterns of sediment retention services in mainland Portugal. Based on Corine Land Cover maps fr…
Home range and birth seasonality of Saguinus nigricollis graellsi in Ecuadorian Amazonia
A field study of Saguinus nigricollis graellsi in the Cuyabeno Faunal Production Reserve, Ecuadorian Amazonia, established the characteristics of the home range and some reproductive aspects of the species. Field data were collected in two climatic seasons: dry, from December 1989 through March 1990, and rainy, from May through August 1990. Eight groups visited and/or lived in the study area during the dry season and ten during the rainy season. …
