  • Improving access to psilocybin-assisted therapy

    Open Access•Vivian W L Tsang, Camille Roney et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2026

Psilocybin-assisted therapy (PAT) is an emerging intervention that combines the administration of psilocybin with structured psychological support to address profound psychological, emotional, and existential distress. Central to this model is the recognition that many forms of suffering-particularly at end of life-are relational in nature and require relational forms of healing. It is our belief that the relational wounds that keep us from conne…

  • The mushroom was more alive and vibrant

Open Access•Pamela Kryskow, Paul Stamets et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Psychedelic Studies•2024•References: 2

Interest in psychedelic research in the West is surging, however, clinical trials have almost exclusively studied synthetic compounds such as MDMA, ketamine, DMT, LSD, ibogaine, and psilocybin. To date, few clinical trials have utilized whole mushroom/plant material like Psilocybe mushrooms, Iboga, or Ayahuasca. Individuals participating in the Roots To Thrive Psilocybin-Assisted Therapy for End of Life Distress program were administered syntheti…

  • A Pilot Study Comparing a Community of Practice Program with and without Concurrent Ketamine-Assisted Therapy

    Vivian W L Tsang, Dragos C Ragazan et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Psychoactive Drugs•2023

The prevalence of depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has increased among healthcare providers, while the effectiveness of conventional treatments remains limited. Ketamine-assisted therapy offers a promising alternative; however, few have integrated ketamine with a group-based therapeutic modality. We report a retrospective, secondary analysis of a 12-week pilot of a Community of Practice (CoP) oriented group therapy p…

  • Transforming Disruption Into Innovation

    Vivian W L Tsang, Alec Yu et al.•ARTICLE•Academic Medicine•2021

The COVID-19 pandemic caused substantial disruptions in medical education. The University of British Columbia (UBC) MD Undergraduate Program (MDUP) is the sixth-largest medical school in North America. MDUP students and faculty developed a joint response to these disruptions to address the curriculum and public health challenges that the pandemic posed. After clinical activities were suspended in March 2020, third- and fourth-year MDUP students f…

  • Access of migrant gold miners to compensation for occupational lung disease

Open Access•Rodney Ehrlich, Stephen Barker et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Migration and Health•2021

The findings provide a quantitative view of differential access to occupational lung disease compensation, including long processing delays, among groups of migrant miners from the South African gold mines. There is a deficit of compensable claims for silicosis and silico-tuberculosis among former miners irrespective of country of origin. While cross-border miner groups appear to file more claims while active, this is reversed once they leave emp…

This study evaluates the benefits and limitations of involving young patients as co-researchers in the creation and execution of an international participatory health research project. Methods: Standardized feedback surveys and qualitative interviews were employed to evaluate the impa…

  • An embodied exercise to address HIV- and tuberculosisrelated stigma of healthcare workers in Southern Africa

Annalee Yassi, Simphiwe Mabhele et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Applied Arts and Health•2019

Healthcare workers (HCW) face the risk of occupational exposure to infectious diseases, especially in countries with high burdens of tuberculosis (TB) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Disclosure of TB and/or HIV status is needed to ensure prompt action and treatment, and, in the case of TB, prevent transmission to co-workers and patients. Traditional education and training has had limited impact. It is known that stigma plays a major role …
