Shifting Students’ Perceptions About Homelessness
Although engineering institutional bodies uphold public welfare and the impact of engineering on people and society, engineering curricula rarely scaffold students to connect their technical learning with sociotechnical perspectives. This paper describes a project-based learning approach where engineering students engaged with issues faced by people experiencing homelessness to better understand the sociotechnical nature of effective, user-center…
STEM Disciplines are More Diverse Than Undergraduate Courses Depict
College STEM curricula that depict scholars with marginalized identities could benefit students by disrupting pervasive and harmful stereotypes. Textbook analyses suggest that this potential has not yet been realized. However, textbook analyses do not present a complete picture of curricula, which also include slide presentations, assignments, lectures, and other materials. Given the methodological challenge of capturing depictions of marginalize…
Latino/a/x Engineering Undergraduate Students’ Experiences with Racialized Ideologies
In this paper, we draw on Anzalda's conocimiento framework to examine 22 Latino/a/x undergraduate students' trajectories to and through engineering education at four university campuses.Findings show that these students have encountered an array of racial stereotypes about Latinos/as/xs, grappled with the lack of representation of Latino/a/x students and faculty in their departments, and been subject to racial microaggressions. Our findings have i…
Positionality practices and dimensions of impact on equity research
Background Many engineering education researchers acknowledge that their positionality impacts their research. Practices for reporting positionality vary widely and rarely incorporate a nuanced discussion of the impact of demographic identities on research. Researchers holding marginalized or relatively hidden identities must navigate additional layers regarding transparency of their positionality. Purpose We identify ways in which positionality …
Compassionate Flexibility and Self-Discipline
The global pandemic of COVID-19 brought about the transition to Emergency Remote Teaching (ERT) at higher education institutions across the United States, prompting both students and the faculty to rapidly adjust to a different modality of teaching and learning. Other crises have induced disruptions to academic continuity (e.g., earthquakes, hurricanes), but not to the same extent as COVID-19, which has affected universities on a global scale. In…
Thinking about Racism in Engineering Education in New Ways [Commentary]
In this paper, we seek to explore the impact of engineering’s persisting predominant whiteness in the United States. Its persisting maleness is also relevant, and we will address this a little more below, but what we want to do here is share a framework that has helped our thinking in this space, and we hope it can inform yours
