Thinking about Racism in Engineering Education in New Ways [Commentary]
In this paper, we seek to explore the impact of engineering’s persisting predominant whiteness in the United States. Its persisting maleness is also relevant, and we will address this a little more below, but what we want to do here is share a framework that has helped our thinking in this space, and we hope it can inform yours
Self-Efficacy as a Long-Term Outcome of a General Education Course on Digital Technologies
This paper investigates the long-term outcomes of a general education course on digital technologies. Through conducting cross-sectional and longitudinal interviews with students, the authors found that non-engineering students who took this course had notable noncognitive, long-term outcomes. A primary focus of the work reported in this paper was the long-term outcome of self-efficacy. The authors also investigated the sources of self-efficacy f…
Engineering Resistors
This qualitative study examined how Latina/o engineering students, members of a student organization, used their emergent resistant capital in their academic trajectories. Their emergent resistant capital, as evident by three main themes, was characterized as a movement from conformist resistance toward transformative resistance. This study finds that emergent resistant capital enabled students to become engineering resistors by engaging in role …
