Expected Estimation Errors in Studies of the Cortisol Awakening Response
OBJECTIVE: Misestimation as a consequence of small sample sizes, small effect sizes, and noisy measurement may be particularly problematic in biomarker studies, the cost of which can adversely affect design decisions. This simulation study used real study designs reported in a meta-analysis of psychosocial correlates of the cortisol awakening response to investigate the probability that the results of these designs would yield misestimates in a c…
Pain as a Risk Factor for Loneliness Among Older Adults
The results indicate that pain may increase the risk of loneliness in older adults. This suggests that appropriate pain interventions could prevent future loneliness, which in turn could prevent functional decline, disability, and premature mortality
Endogenous Cortisol Exposure and Declarative Verbal Memory
OBJECTIVE: Exposure to endogenous cortisol is associated with hippocampal degeneration and may contribute to problems with declarative memory, but effects of persistent versus phasic cortisol elevations have not been established. The present longitudinal investigation examined persistent individual differences and phasic changes in cortisol as they related to verbal memory, executive functions, and subjective cognitive function. METHODS: Older ad…
