The Associations of Trans-3′-Hydroxy Cotinine, Cotinine, and the Nicotine Metabolite Ratio in Pediatric Patients with Tobacco Smoke Exposure
(1) Background: Trans -3'-hydroxy cotinine (3HC) and cotinine (COT) are tobacco smoke exposure (TSE) biomarkers and the 3HC/COT ratio is a marker of CYP2A6 activity, an enzyme which metabolizes nicotine. The primary objective was to assess the associations of these TSE biomarkers with sociodemographics and TSE patterns in children who lived with ≥1 smoker. (2) Methods: A convenience sample of 288 children (mean age (SD) = 6.42 (4.8) years) was re…
Public Participation in Air Sampling and Water Quality Test Kit Development to Enable Citizen Science

Hilbert, MS, Rusty Roberts, John Quirolgico, MS, Rachael Shepler, Gerry Beckner, Jennifer Veevers, PhD, Jeff Burkle, and Roman Jandarov, PhD What Is the Purpose of This Study/Review? • To establish an academic–community partnership to address Guernsey County residents' concern regarding environmental quality ne…
Public Participation in Air Sampling and Water Quality Test Kit Development to Enable Citizen Science
Academic-community partnerships were instrumental in the identification of sampling locations, obtaining the participation of landowners, and conducting sampling. Measuring the impact of NGE activities on air quality is challenging owing to competing exposures, limited resources, and access to sites. Water quality test kits were found by Guernsey County teachers to be useful tools in the classroom
