Social Contexts and Practical Ethics of the Buddhist Precept Against Intoxicants
Recent archaeological evidence indicates that Gandhāran wine culture and Buddhist communities shared the same social and material environment. However, surviving evidence does not permit direct reconstruction of lay Buddhists’ drinking practices. Grounded in source criticism, this study combines contextual historical interpretation with comparative textual analysis to examine Gandhāran wine culture, the application of the precept against intoxica…
Embodied learning for computational thinking in early primary education
This study examined how embodied learning experiences support students to grasp abstract CT concepts in early primary education. Forty-seven students were recruited from first- and second-grade classrooms. They had five embodied activities that simulated robot programming tasks requiring students to (1) figure out a route from a starting point to a destination, (2) convert the spatial information into codes, and (3) perform spatial movements acco…
Parallel Instruction of Text-based and Block-based Programming
Computational thinking practices
The primary goals of this research were to investigate the development of computational thinking (CT) skills among elementary students and to identify areas for improvement in their CT practices. Empirical investigations, accomplished in a learner-centered, problem-based learning curriculum for sixth-graders, sought to examine student proficiency in CT practices by analyzing programs developed by students. A total of 30 students participated in t…

How to change a state
Computer science education has been making dramatic increases in recent years. Across the US, different states are advancing computer science education through different policies. However, as a state makes choices to advance computer science education, it is critical to consider how these policies will broaden participation in computing (BPC). Many have indicated that only white and Asian males (who make up 30% of our population) currently have t…
