  • Mapping the longitudinal dynamics of Learning Communities about healthy weight approaches across Dutch municipalities

Open Access•Maud Ter Bogt, Kirsten E Bevelander et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2026

Background. Learning from one another and cross-sectoral collaboration is essential among multidisciplinary challenges, such as in (healthcare) approaches that connect the medical and social domain. To strengthen cross-sectoral learning and collaboration, learning communities (LCs) were implemented in 2021 across five municipalities in the Netherlands. Previous research gave insights into isolated variables that help or hinder creating successful…

  • Exploring actions and perceived impact of Learning Communities about healthy weight approaches across Dutch municipalities

Open Access•Maud Ter Bogt, Kirsten E Bevelander et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2026

Background. To reduce overweight and obesity rates, various Dutch municipalities applied healthy weight approaches (HWAs) that connect the medical and social domain. To strengthen HWAs and thus healthcare, learning communities (LCs) were implemented in 2021 that included multidisciplinary members like policy makers, care professionals, practice professionals and patients/citizens. LCs aim to stimulate learning, cross-sectoral collaboration, and a…

  • The multidisciplinary and participatory process to develop the Rubric for Learning Communities about Health Approaches

Open Access•Maud J J ter Bogt, Hilde Tobi et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2025

Introduction: Many Dutch municipalities implement a systems approach to promote health behavior among citizens. Learning communities (LCs) in these approaches enable stakeholders to collaborate and learn from one another. To optimize LCs, insights are needed into how LCs create knowledge and put it into action. This study aimed to describe the multidisciplinary and participatory process to develop a rubric for multidisciplinary Learning communiti…

  • Exploring learning communities’ actions and perceived impact on healthy weight approaches across Dutch municipalities

    Open Access•Maud J J ter Bogt, Kirsten E Bevelander et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

Multidisciplinary LCs can contribute to creating new ideas and collaborations and to applying actions for a local HWA across most LPTs and system levels. These insights can be used during LC meetings to continuously adjust LCs and HWA actions when necessary. Future research is needed, for instance to gain further insights into new topics, the desired number of actions per LPT, and long-term LC impacts

  • Citizens’ perspectives on healthy weight approaches in low SEP neighborhoods

    Open Access•Maud J J ter Bogt, Yentl Z Te Riele et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2024

Conducting inclusive qualitative research from a systems perspective among citizens living in low SEP neighborhoods has contributed valuable insights into their needs. This enables practical implementation of HWAs by providing a deeper understanding of the LPTs within the HWA system. LPTs can help HWA stakeholders to further develop current HWAs toward systems approaches. Future research could study the leverage points that may contribute to LPT …

  • A constant learning curve in working towards integrated health policy

    Open Access•Kristine Mourits, Gerdine A J Fransen et al.•ARTICLE•Evidence & Policy•2024

The greatest challenge when using knowledge in practice lies in expanding the collaboration between researchers, policymakers, professionals and inhabitants, for example by using boundary spanners. The collaboration should aim to organise a long-lasting adaptive collaboration aimed at mutual learning. This should focus on shared discussion of relevant knowledge, with less emphasis on pure acquisition and use of scientific knowledge

  • Implementation of Combined Lifestyle Interventions for Children with Overweight or Obesity

    Open Access•Jenneke J E H Saat, Elke Naumann et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023

Carrying out and adapting the content of the CLI to the community was experienced as easier compared to the management of the organizational aspects of the CLI. For these aspects, separate funding is essential. In the future, mapping the characteristics of a community will help to clarify this influence on the implementation even better

  • The degree of consistency of applying parental dietary and sedentary behavior rules as indicators for overweight in children

    Open Access•Emilie L M Ruiter, Gerdine A J Fransen et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2022

Parents' consistency in applying rules regarding dietary and sedentary behaviors was associated with parents' level of education and ethnic background, as well as with children's dietary and sedentary behaviors and their likelihood of becoming overweight. Our results may contribute to helping make healthcare professionals aware that children of parents who do not apply sedentary behavior rules are more likely to become overweight, as well as the …

  • Improving Health through Reducing Stress’

    Open Access•Gerda Wink, Gerdine A J Fransen et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

In order to reduce health inequities, a socio-ecological approach and community engagement are needed to develop sustained interventions with a positive effect on the health of disadvantaged groups. This qualitative study was part of the development phase of a community health promotion programme. The study aimed to provide insight into the perceptions of parents in a disadvantaged neighbourhood about health, and their priorities for the communit…

  • Everyday life situations in which mothers experience difficulty stimulating healthy energy balance–related behavior in their school-age children

    Open Access•Emilie L M Ruiter, Gerdine A J Fransen et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2019

We identified five difficult everyday life situations related to healthy energy balance-related behavior. These five difficult situations were used as the input for developing a web-based parenting program designed to prevent children from becoming overweight. We reasoned that if we use these situations and the underlying reasons, many parents would recognize these situations and are willing to learn how to deal with them and complete the e-learn…
