Navigating Hope (Hypermobile Online Pain managemEnt): Perspectives and Experiences From People With Hypermobile Ehlers–Danlos Syndrome or Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder on a Condition‐Specific Online…
INTRODUCTION: The Hypermobile Online Pain managemEnt (HOPE) programme is a stakeholder informed intervention adopting the biopsychosocial pain approach, specifically for people with hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (hEDS) and hypermobility spectrum disorder (HSD) experiencing pain. The programme topics included were based on a modified Delphi of a large sample of stakeholders: people with hEDS/HSD and healthcare practitioners who are experience…
‘It Would've Been Nice to Know About Allied Health Earlier’: Insights From People With Parkinson's Disease
INTRODUCTION: Allied health interventions can improve impairments and quality of life for people with Parkinson's disease (PwPD). However, allied health services are underutilised, and PwPD encounter barriers when accessing allied health. This study examined the allied health referral patterns of PwPD in New South Wales, Australia, from their perspective. METHODS: Community-dwelling PwPD and their care-partners (CPs) were recruited. Participants …
Experiences of Home‐Based Pulmonary Rehabilitation With mHealth and Centre‐Based Pulmonary Rehabilitation in People With Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: A Qualitative Study
BACKGROUND: Mobile health (mHealth) provides innovative solutions to improve access to pulmonary rehabilitation (PR). This study aimed to explore the experiences of people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) who undertook either an 8-week home-based PR with a mHealth application (app) (m-PR) or centre-based PR (CB-PR). METHODS: Convenience then purposive sampling was used to recruit participants enrolled in a randomised controlled t…
A Qualitative Study of Aboriginal Peoples' Health Care Experiences With Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
Aboriginal Australians experience a high prevalence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), with high rates of potentially preventable hospitalisations. However, little is known about Aboriginal peoples' experiences of living with COPD and how they navigate health care systems. This study used thematic analysis and Aboriginal methodology to explore Aboriginal peoples' lived experiences of COPD, their health care journey from receiving a …
Acceptability and barriers of a GP–physiotherapist partnership in the diagnosis and management of COPD in primary care: A qualitative study
INTRODUCTION: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is commonly diagnosed and managed in primary care but there is evidence that this has been suboptimal, with low confidence expressed in providing interventions requiring behaviour change. The aim of this study was to determine the acceptability of a general practitioner (GP)-physiotherapist partnership in the diagnosis and management of COPD in primary care and to explore the experiences …
A mixed methods study of Aboriginal health workers’ and exercise physiologists’ experiences of co-designing chronic lung disease ‘yarning’ education resources

Teaching Physiotherapy during the Initial Stages of the Covid-19 Pandemic: What Did We Learn
The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020 resulted in a rapid shift to online learning for physiotherapy education in Australia and around the world. This Sydney-based qualitative study explored the reflections of physiotherapy educators and leaders involved in delivering physiotherapy programs with the aim of gaining insight into what happened to physiotherapy education during the initial stages of the pandemic and what lessons were learn…
Current Practice of Physical Activity Counselling within Physiotherapy Usual Care and Influences on Its Use: A Cross-Sectional Survey
Physical activity counselling has demonstrated effectiveness at increasing physical activity when delivered in healthcare, but is not routinely practised. This study aimed to determine (1) current use of physical activity counselling by physiotherapists working within publicly funded hospitals; and (2) influences on this behaviour. A cross-sectional survey of physiotherapists was conducted across five hospitals within a local health district in S…
What do consumers with chronic conditions expect from their interactions with general practitioners? A qualitative study of Australian consumer and provider perspectives
BACKGROUND: More than half of Australian adults manage one or more chronic conditions through ongoing interactions with general practitioners (GPs). Their experience of general practice interactions has important implications for their health outcomes and is thus important to explore in-depth. Consumer expectations have emerged as a key consideration in this regard. How well they met in care settings can inform consumers' satisfaction and respons…
Context matters for primary health care access: A multi-method comparative study of contextual influences on health service access arrangements across models of primary health care
These findings provide valuable insights for policy makers charged with improving access arrangements in PHC services. A financially sustainable service underpins attempts to improve access that meets the needs of the service population. Smaller services may lack infrastructure and capacity, suggesting there may be a minimum size for enhancing access. Access arrangements may be facilitated by aligning the objectives between PHC, LHN and other sta…
Associations of total and type-specific physical activity with mortality in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: A population-based cohort study
We found a dose-response association between physical activity and all-cause and CVD mortality risk in people with COPD, with protective effects appearing at levels considerably lower than the general physical activity recommendations. People with COPD may benefit from engagement in low levels of physical activity, particularly walking and structured exercise
EHealth and Integrated Primary Health Care Centres
Background: Integrated primary health care (PHC) relies on connectivity and seamless information-sharing across primary, secondary, acute, aged and social care. eHealth tools can promote a better patient journey and avoid duplication of care processes such as pathology and imaging or unplanned attendances at emergency departments and hospitalisations.Conceptual framework: This encompasses integration, Informatics Capability Maturity (ICM), multid…
How are co-located primary health care centres integrating care for people with chronic conditions
Introduction: Governments are investing in new models of primary health care to meet contemporary challenges of chronic disease and that fit with their particular context. In Australia two levels of government have responsibilities for health policy and funding. Both have invested in new models of primary care involving GPs, nurses and allied health. Little is known about how they are developing the arrangements for integrating care and their capa…
