  • Healthy lifestyle in low-socioeconomic groups

Open Access•Liza A Hoveling, Manna Alma et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2025

Background: Low socioeconomic position (SEP) increases the risk of health inequalities. Understanding how to realize lifestyle improvements in groups with low SEP may offer routes to reduce these inequalities, and information from professionals involved in this target can support this. Our aims were to gain insight into the professionals' perspectives on factors that influence the lifestyle of individuals with low SEP, and to identify promising a…

  • Parent’s Perspective on Continuity of Care in the Maternity Care and Child Health Services Continuum

Open Access•A Hermans, Silke Boertien et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2025•References: 3

Ideally, (a) parents enter the postnatal period well-prepared, and well-informed about self-care, PCHC and possible postnatal carepathways, (b) number of caretransfers is limited, (c) by overlapping maternity care and PCHC, parents are provided with an opportunity to maintain meaningful relationships with their care providers, and (d) information is consistent, family-centred, and tailored

  • Biological and contextual determinants of early development in marginalized Roma communities

Open Access•Shoshana Chovan, Daniela Filakovska Bobakova et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal for Equity…•2024

The RomaREACH project is a multicomponent study of social determinants of health and development in early childhood that can provide new evidence on the relationship of risk and protective factors with early development. Such young children from difficult-to-reach marginalized Roma communities are rarely included in research, and information about the scope and the extent of inequities in health and development in the period of early childhood is…

  • Desirable but not feasible

Open Access•Daniela Filakovska Bobakova, Shoshana Chovan et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2022

Roma are the largest and most disadvantaged ethnic minority in Europe often facing generational poverty, and limited access to education, employment, housing, and various types of services. Despite many international and national initiatives, children from marginalized Roma communities face multiple risks and are being disadvantaged as early as from conception onward. We, therefore, aimed to identify measures and/or interventions targeting equity…

  • Connecting Obstetric, Maternity, Pediatric and Preventive Child Health Care

Open Access•Silke Boertien, Arie Franx et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

Collaboration between birth care and Preventive Child Health Care (PCHC) in the Netherlands is so far insufficient. The aim of the Connecting Obstetric; Maternity; Pediatric and PCHC (COMPLETE) study is to: (1) better understand the collaboration between birth care and PCHC and its underlying mechanisms (including barriers and facilitators); (2) investigate whether a new multidisciplinary strategy that is developed as part of the project will res…

  • How to make healthy early childhood development more likely in marginalized Roma communities

Open Access•Shoshana Chovan, Daniela Filakovska Bobakova et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal for Equity…•2022

Our results reflect the public and political discourse and indicate significant barriers to implementation. Reducing inequalities in early childhood needs to be addressed through coordinated efforts

  • Associations between Socio-Economic Status and Unfavorable Social Indicators of Child Wellbeing; a Neighbourhood Level Data Design

    Open Access•M Minde, Marlou L A de Kroon et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

In this study using repeated measurements, a lower neighbourhood SES was significantly associated with a higher prevalence of unfavorable social indicators of child wellbeing. This contributes to the body of evidence that neighbourhood SES is strongly related to child health and a child's ability to reach its full potential in later life. Future studies should consist of larger longitudinal datasets, potentially across countries, and should attem…

  • Maternal Anxiety, Infant Stress, and the Role of Live-Performed Music Therapy during Nicu Stay in The Netherlands

    Open Access•Karianne E Kraft, Artur C Jaschke et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

Having an infant in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) elicits maternal anxiety, which may hamper parent-child bonding. We performed a prospective cohort study to describe anxiety in mothers of infants born before 30 weeks of gestation during NICU stay in The Netherlands, and investigated the influence of infant stress and gestational age. Second, we performed a randomized-controlled live-performed music therapy trial (LPMT trial) to investi…

  • Young adults’ self-sufficiency in daily life

Open Access•Suzanne J van den Toren, Amy van Grieken et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Psychology•2020

Our findings underline the importance of addressing self-sufficiency, sickness absence, and depressive symptoms, preferably before the transition from adolescence to young adulthood has begun

  • Risk Factors for Positive Appraisal of Mistreatment during Childbirth among Ethiopian Midwifery Students

Open Access•Rena Bakker, Ephrem Daniel Sheferaw et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

The maternal mortality ratio and neonatal mortality rate remain high in Ethiopia, where few births are attended by qualified healthcare staff. This is partly due to care providers' mistreatment of women during childbirth, which creates a culture of anxiety that decreases the use of healthcare services. This study employed a cross-sectional design to identify risk factors for positive appraisal of mistreatment during childbirth. We asked 391 Ethio…

  • Development of a Prediction Model to Identify Children at Risk of Future Developmental Delay at Age 4 in a Population-Based Setting

    Open Access•Nienke H van Dokkum, Sijmen A Reijneveld et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

Our aim was to develop a prediction model for infants from the general population, with easily obtainable predictors, that accurately predicts risk of future developmental delay at age 4 and then assess its performance. Longitudinal cohort data were used ( N = 1983), including full-term and preterm children. Development at age 4 was assessed using the Ages and Stages Questionnaire. Candidate predictors included perinatal and parental factors as w…

  • Addressing sickness absence among adolescents and young adults

  • School Absenteeism, Health-Related Quality of Life [HRQOL] and Happiness among Young Adults Aged 16–26 Years

Open Access•Suzanne J van den Toren, Amy van Grieken et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2019

This study examines the association between school absenteeism, health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and happiness among young adults aged 16-26 years attending vocational education. Cross-sectional data from a survey among 676 young adults were analyzed. School absenteeism was measured by the self-reported number of sick days in the past eight weeks and hours of truancy in the past four weeks. HRQOL was measured by the 12-item Short Form Healt…

  • Does a reduction in alcohol use by Dutch high school students relate to higher use of tobacco and cannabis

    Open Access•Claudia E Verhagen, Daan G Uitenbroek et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2015

Between 2005 and 2009 alcohol consumption strongly decreased among high school students. This may be due to the national prevention campaign which in the same period highlighted the importance of not drinking before the age of 16. The decrease in smoking and cannabis use between 2005 and 2009 may be due to clustering with alcohol consumption. A reduction in the use of alcohol in adolescence did not lead to replacement by tobacco or cannabis use

  • O4-1.3 Overweight in short and tall children

Paula Van Dommelen, Marlou L A de Kroon et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2011

Introduction It is known that body mass index is correlated with height. This suggests that the prevalence rates of overweight and obesity differ between tall and short children. Our aim is to study the impact of height during childhood on the national prevalence rates of overweight and obesity at childhood and adulthood. Methods We used cross-sectional growth data from the previous two Dutch nationwide surveys performed in 1997 (n=14 500) and 20…
