  • Playing Towards Death: Suits’ ‘Game-Playing’ Utopia in Dialogue with Heidegger’s ‘Being-toward-Death’

    Open Access•Pedro Antunes, Paulo Antunes•ARTICLE•Human Arenas•2026

This article presents a dialogue between Martin Heidegger’s existential phenomenology of death (being-toward-death) and Bernard Suits’ utopian vision of life as ‘game-playing’. Where Heidegger frames death as the horizon that singularises Dasein and demands an authentic confrontation with finitude, Suits reimagines mortality as a lusory challenge: by voluntarily embracing self-imposed obstacles, play becomes a therapeutic means to disarm existent…

    Open Access•Pedro Antunes, Paulo Antunes•ARTICLE•Human Arenas•2026

This paper introduces and critically examines the contributions of Portuguese philosopher António Cabral to the philosophy of play and games (and sport), situating his work within the broader context of global ludic theory. Born in Portugal’s Douro region, Cabral—poet, ethnographer, and ludic activist—developed a ‘play impulse’ theory, framing play as a motivational drive toward pleasure through repetition, transcending work/play dichotomies. Ana…

Background: Individuals at risk of, or living with, cardiac conditions such as heart failure are at increased risk of mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety, and vice versa. There is a need to establish better processes for supporting communities to understand gaps in their care delivery systems for brain-heart interconnected conditions and for the co-design, implementation and evaluation of community-driven health initiatives su…

  • Sensor Cell Network for Pressure, Temperature and Position Detection on Wheelchair Users

Open Access•Cátia Tavares, Daniela Real et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

This work proposes an optical sensing network to monitor pressure and temperature in specific areas of a wheelchair to prevent pressure ulcers and to monitor the position of the wheelchair user by analyzing its pressure distribution. The sensing network is composed of six optical fiber Bragg grating (FBG)-based sensor cells. Each sensor cell is built from a polylactic acid (PLA) base and has two FBGs, one embedded in epoxy resin to monitor pressu…
