  • The Bill of Rights, transformative ecclesial leadership, and the kairotic task

    Open Access•McGlory Speckman•ARTICLE•Pharos Journal of Theology•2026

This article argues that South Africa's democratic transition remains incomplete because democratic values have not been sufficiently institutionalised at the community level. Drawing on the Kairos tradition, I propose a model of transformative ecclesial leadership that advances the constitutional vision embodied in the Bill of Rights. I argue that transformative ecclesial leadership, equipped to function in a democratic context, rather than resi…

  • Purposeful Jibes and Gospel

    Open Access•McGlory Speckman•ARTICLE•Pharos Journal of Theology•2025•References: 4

This article seeks to make a case for the use of the mgodoyi label to refer to perpetrators of corruption in South Africa by examining the jibes used by Jesus against his opponents in the first century. It argues that while Jesus discouraged random name-calling, he strategically used various jibes in the process of proclaiming his gospel, to stir up the ‘consciences’ of his opponents and dislodge them from their philosophical positions, with the …

  • Option for the Poor and Compassion for the Vulnerable

    Open Access•McGlory Speckman•ARTICLE•Pharos Journal of Theology•2023

This article motivates for the retention of the option for the poor paradigm in response to Michel Temgo’s (2018) proposal for its replacement with “compassion for the vulnerable”. It argues that the two principles, “option for the poor” and “compassion for the vulnerable”, are Biblebased with different functions in the Bible. For that reason, they should not be conflated. The option for the poor principle has, over five decades, undergirded theo…

  • Destroying the City, Burning the fields

    Open Access•McGlory Speckman•ARTICLE•Pharos Journal of Theology•2022•References: 5

The aim of this article is to construct a New Testament concept and definition of the phenomenon of corruption. It contends that current definitions which are based on the World Bank’s and Transparency International’s political-materialistic definitions either miss or ignore the “unique” position adopted by New Testament writers whose focus is on the protection of the ideal, that is, the “common good”, against disruptors’ destructive actions. Pur…

  • God Abhors Corruption

    Open Access•McGlory Speckman•ARTICLE•Pharos Journal of Theology•2020•Cited by: 1

Corruption has become a buzz word the world-over today. South Africa is no less affected by it than are other countries. Many counter-corruption measures have been devised from a political perspective with no visible results. This reflection is an attempt to introduce a religious intervention. The article argues that the narrative of Ananias and Sapphira (Acts: 1-11) has all the elements of corruption as we know it today as well as a decisive res…

  • Bible subversion

    Open Access•McGlory Speckman•ARTICLE•HTS Teologiese Studies /…•2016

The use of biblical texts by politicians in recent years has led to a proliferation of critical publications by biblical scholars. Some focus on reconstructing the rhetoric itself, others on analysing the historical context while others still, on why and how the scriptures are used. A lack of an ideology critique dimension makes these analyses appear to be naïve to the extent that they miss the element of the subversion of scriptures by politicia…

  • A kairos for the lowly? Reflections on Luke's story of a rejected fortune or tyche and lessons for South Africa

    Open Access•McGlory Speckman•ARTICLE•Verbum et Ecclesia•2016•Cited by: 5•References: 1

This article argues that failure of Jerusalem to accept or recognise its fortune (Lk 19:41 44) may be ascribed to a difference in expectations between the Temple rulers and the lowly, who interacted with Jesus at their level. At the outset, the kairos was anticipated and welcomed by the lowly, and throughout the two-part narrative the respective attitudes of the lowly and Temple rulers towards Jesus are contrasted, whilst conflict between Jesus a…

  • The Kairos Behind the Kairos Document a Contextual Exegesis of Luke 19

    McGlory Speckman•ARTICLE•Religion and Theology•1998

In this article I argue that behind the Kairos Document (KD) there is Luke's kairos or at least his view of it, which the kairos theologians did not take cognisance of Had they attempted an exegesis of Luke 19:41-44, whose spirit is partly reflected in the KD, it would have become clear that Luke's view of a kairos points back to the liberating moment of Jesus, yet forward to the consequences of missing that moment. Thus the kairos is intended fo…
