  • An introduction to caring Chinese cinemas

Open Access•Pengnan Hu, Jeroen De Kloet et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Chinese Cinemas•2026

This introductory article proposes ‘caring Chinese cinemas’ as a conceptual and methodological framework for rethinking the relations between cinema, ethics, aesthetics, ecology, politics, and criticism. Starting from recent debates on care, we emphasise both the productivity and the ambivalence of the concept: care can sustain, protect, and repair, but it can also control, exclude, or reproduce unequal relations of power. Bringing this discussio…

  • From Brotherhood to Homo-Desire

    Open Access•Pengnan Hu, Rishuai Chen•ARTICLE•Media and Communication•2026

This article examines how Chinese bromance dramas produce and circulate homo-desire under a regime of moral censorship. Existing commentary often treats bromance as a strategic substitute for boys’ love (BL): a compromised form that compensates for the absence of explicit same-sex romance. Challenging this assumption, we draw on Deleuze and Guattari’s concept of desiring-production to argue that bromance is not defined by what it cannot show, but…

  • Care of whom? How ‘鬼’ (Gui, ghost) returned in Chinese online folklore ghost films as care

    Pengnan Hu•ARTICLE•Journal of Chinese Cinemas•2025

AbstarctIs censorship an act of care—say, for the well-being of the audience? The answer may be ambiguous. In the case of ghost film censorship, ghosts are often banned out of a concern rooted in modernization, as they are considered irrational. However, in recent years, Chinese society has increasingly turned to folk beliefs as a source of emotional comfort in the face of life’s uncertainties. To explore this tension, I examine the resurgence of…

  • Roasting Mulan

Pengnan Hu•ARTICLE•Journal of Film and Video•2025

for chinese audiences, Mulan, the live-action 2020 Hollywood film directed by Niki Caro, is a failure. Mulan has an all-Chinese cast and recounts an ancient and well-loved Chinese story, yet it performed poorly in China, the very country that was expected to generate a large proportion of its revenue. In fact, Mulan is one of the least popular Disney films released in China. Its $47 million box office falls well short of revenues generated by Ave…

  • Belt and Road Initiative-supported co-production films

    Open Access•Pengnan Hu•ARTICLE•International Communication Gazette•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 12

Through policy analysis and close reading of two films, this article reveals films’ increasing role in China's geopolitical plan, the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). The co-production film Xuanzang shows that the Silk Road past is used to illustrate BRI's pledge for a beneficial future. Even though Xuanzang's story alludes to history, it was selected for its significance in popular culture, thereby reflecting ‘hyperreality’. In any event, the Sil…
