  • Earth beyond six of nine planetary boundaries

Open Access•Katherine Richardson, Will Steffen et al.•ARTICLE•Science Advances•2023

This planetary boundaries framework update finds that six of the nine boundaries are transgressed, suggesting that Earth is now well outside of the safe operating space for humanity. Ocean acidification is close to being breached, while aerosol loading regionally exceeds the boundary. Stratospheric ozone levels have slightly recovered. The transgression level has increased for all boundaries earlier identified as overstepped. As primary productio…

  • Shutdown of Atlantic overturning circulation could cause persistent increase of primary production in the Pacific

Open Access•Ralf Liebermann, Matthias Hofmann et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2023

A potential shutdown of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) is commonly recognized to have a significant impact on the Northern hemispheric climate, notably in Northern Europe. The collapse of the northbound heat transport by the AMOC is supposed to cool down surface air temperatures at the Scandinavian coast by up to 6 K accompanied by a concomitant nutrient starvation of phytoplankton in Subarctic and Arctic regions. However,…

  • Protest American English Influence or Protest Against It? Changing Prepositions in Nigerian Twitter English

    Open Access•Matthias Hofmann•ARTICLE•Discourse and Interaction•2020

According to Alo and Mesthrie (2008), Nigerian English (NigE) becomes increasingly more influenced by American English (AmE), due to contact with American-trained professionals among other factors (cf. Gut 2008, Jowitt 1991). The online micro-blogging service Twitter offers potential communication with a vast number of English natives around the globe, using English in a vernacular usage domain, among other domains (or genres such as a news tweet…

  • Declining ocean chlorophyll under unabated anthropogenic CO 2 emissions

Open Access•Matthias Hofmann, Boris Worm et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2011

Photosynthetic assimilation of carbon dioxide and inorganic nutrients by phytoplankton constitutes a necessary prerequisite for sustaining marine life. This process is tightly linked to the concentration of chlorophyll in the ocean’s euphotic zone. According to a recent field study marine chlorophyll(a) concentrations have declined over the last century with an estimated global rate of 1.0 % of the global median per year. Here we attempt to ident…
