Children of the abyss: Investigating the association between isotopic physiological stress and skeletal pathology in London during the Industrial Revolution
Evidence of skeletal treponematosis from the medieval burial ground of S t. M ary S pital, L ondon, and implications for the origins of the disease in E urope
Treponematosis is a syndrome of chronic infectious diseases. There has been much debate on its origins and spread, particularly with regard to venereal syphilis, an unsightly and debilitating disease in preantibiotic populations. The osteological analysis of 5,387 individuals excavated by Museum of London Archaeology from the medieval burial ground of St. Mary Spital in London (dated c 1120–1539) provided an unprecedented opportunity to investiga…
Resurrection: Who is it good for? The price of achievement at the London Hospital
The London Hospital, located in the heart of the East End, grew in tandem with the industrialization and increasing population of an impoverished area of the capital. It provided care and emergency facilities to employees of local industries amongst others. Archaeological excavations uncovered a forgotten burial ground for poor patients. Osteological and documentary evidence combined to reveal that many of the dead were first given to the hospita…
Smoking and health in London's East End in the first half of the 19th century
The harmful effects of smoking are now proven, but to what extent can tobacco use be identified in 19th-century skeletal remains? The full osteological analysis of 705 individuals from the cemetery of St Mary and St Michael (open 1843–54) in Whitechapel, London, revealed a high prevalence of pipe smoking amongst the male population. In addition to a lower life expectancy, the smokers were found to have increased levels of skeletal evidence for lu…
The treatment of leprosy in 19th-century London: A case study from St Marylebone cemetery
A young adult male, context [825], exhibiting a suite of proliferative and erosive skeletal changes, was excavated from the old burial ground of St Marylebone, London, in 2005 by the Museum of London Archaeology Service (MoLAS). Although pathognomonic rhinomaxillary changes were absent, a number of lesions were of a type previously recorded in individuals suffering from lepromatous leprosy, including resorption of the alveolar process of the maxi…
Getting even for customer mistreatment: The role of moral identity in the relationship between customer interpersonal injustice and employee sabotage.
Research on the "dark side" of organizational behavior has determined that employee sabotage is most often a reaction by disgruntled employees to perceived mistreatment. To date, however, most studies on employee retaliation have focused on intra-organizational sources of (in)justice. Results from this field study of customer service representatives (N = 358) showed that interpersonal injustice from customers relates positively to customer-direct…
International cameos and a plea for co‐operation in new information technologies
When initially asked to prepare this paper on an international perspective of New Information Technologies in education I was, at that time, heavily involved in editing an international journal for the use of microelectronics for the handicapped learner. At the same time I was preparing to carry out the role of Chairman for the Fifth International Conference on Technology and Education to be held in Edinburgh; all in all, one would say, a reasona…

Woodrow Wilson and Walter Lippmann: A Narrative of Historical Imagery
N THE PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN of 1912, Woodrow Wilson made his theme New Freedom, but what he meant was not so much new kind of freedom as restoration of old, old individual freedom lost in new social age. In -this age, he said, the every-day relationships of men are largely with great impersonal concerns, with organization, not with other individual men. There was, as he put it, a new era of human relationships, new stage-setting for -the drama of…
