  • Pharmacist-Led Fentanyl Test Strip Education and Distribution for Veterans in Substance Use Treatment

    Open Access•Tessa Rife-Pennington, Michael E Douglas et al.•ARTICLE•Substance Use & Misuse•2026

Background Unregulated fentanyl use is driving overdose deaths, and fentanyl test strips (FTS) are a tool to support overdose risk reduction. This quality improvement project assessed a novel pharmacist-led model of FTS education and distribution Veterans Affairs (VA) substance use disorder (SUD) care and its association with fentanyl-related knowledge and overdose risk reduction behaviors (ORRBs).Methods This prospective single-arm cohort projec…

  • Harm reduction on the front lines

Open Access•Tessa Rife-Pennington, Wendy Xie et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Distress and…•2026

Introduction: People experiencing homelessness face overlapping health, substance use, and material needs that are not always met in traditional care settings. Community-based organizations (CBOs) offer trusted, low-barrier access points, and embedding a clinical pharmacist practitioner (CPP) in these settings may expand harm reduction and education services. Methods: We conducted a prospective quality improvement project with a San Francisco-bas…

  • Internet-Enabled Behaviors in Older Adults During the Pandemic

    Open Access•Jared F Benge, Alyssa Aguirre et al.•ARTICLE•Work Aging and Retirement•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 5

In response to social distancing measures during the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a need to increase the frequency of internet enabled behaviors (IEBs). To date, little is known about how the pandemic impacted IEBs in older adults, a population that has historically been linked to lower digital literacy and utilization. We administered an online survey between April and July 2021 to 298 adults who were over age 50 (mean age = 73 years; 93.5% non-…

  • Availability and funding of clinical genomic sequencing globally

    Open Access•Kimberley A Phillips, Michael P Douglas et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2021

The emergence of next-generation genomic sequencing (NGS) tests for use in clinical care has generated widespread interest around the globe, but little is known about the availability and funding of these tests worldwide. We examined NGS availability across world regions and countries, with a particular focus on availability of three key NGS tests—Whole-Exome Sequencing or Whole-Genome Sequencing for diagnosis of suspected genetic diseases such a…

  • Hereditary cancer panel testing challenges and solutions for the latinx community

    Open Access•Michael P Douglas, Grace A Lin et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Community Genetics•2021

Hereditary breast and ovarian cancers (HBOCs) are common among the Latinx population, and risk testing is recommended using multi-gene hereditary cancer panels (HCPs). However, little is known about how payer reimbursement and out-of-pocket expenses impact provider ordering of HCP in the Latinx population. Our objective is to describe key challenges and possible solutions for HCP testing in the Latinx population. As part of a larger study, we con…

  • Qualitative exploration of the impact of employment and volunteering upon the health and wellbeing of African refugees settled in regional Australia

Open Access•Nina Wood, Grace Charlwood et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2019

Unique experiences with employment and volunteering in a regional area amongst a refugee community were explored. Our results describe various ways in which meaningful employment and volunteering can facilitate positive health and wellbeing outcomes of refugees, and thus reinforces the importance of providing such opportunities to ensure successful settlement. The benefits of volunteering in this community have not been previously explored. Addit…
