    Janice M Aski, Cinzia Russi•ARTICLE•Folia Linguistica Historica•2010

    Open Access•Janice M Aski•ARTICLE•Foreign Language Annals•2005•Cited by: 4•References: 27

This study identifies the inadequate aspects of mechanical drills and offers alternative activities for the early stages of language practice, whose formats and features comply with recent research in the learning and acquisition of foreign languages. Wong and VanPatten's (2003) referential structured input ac…

  • Foreign Language Textbook Activities

    Open Access•Janice M Aski•ARTICLE•Foreign Language Annals•2003•Cited by: 7•References: 15

Recent research in second language acquisition found that learners reached higher levels of achievement when grammar practice included the processing and negotiation of meaning. This study explored the degree to which certain textbook activities reflected the earlier findings. A typology of production activities — based on the degree to which the activities required learners to process meaning — was established. The activities for two grammar poi…

  • Prototype categorization and phonological split

    Janice M Aski•ARTICLE•Diachronica•2001

This paper examines the phonological split of Latin /tj/ and /kj/ in Italian within a cognitive, prototype framework, in which sound change is characterized as phonetically and lexically gradual. The analysis reveals that (1) the process by which speakers assign the allophonic variants produced by assimilation of the dental and velar to the following yod to their respective phonemes can be described as prototype categorization, which is argued to…

  • Lightening the Teacher's Load

    Janice M Aski•ARTICLE•Italica•1996

Jn elementary Italian language textbooks, students often run into lists of forms that they are expected to memorize. In addition, tables of information, such as the one presenting all the possible articulated prepositions, can suggest a need for memorization rather than providing a productive model to generate all forms. Labeling elements as exceptions and presenting forms in tables to be memorized can be viewed as a veiled claim that the languag…

  • Verbal suppletion

    Open Access•Janice M Aski•ARTICLE•Linguistics•1995•Cited by: 1

In this paper, the A. attempt to show that person-number suppletive replacements follow language-specific alternation patterns, or templates, which mark the positions of stem alternations often shared by several verbs. These paradigmatic frameworks are stored in the lexicon with their verb forms and guide verbal restructuring processes by serving as the base configuration for suppletive replacements. The relative strength of a pattern is directly…
