Beyond ‘developmentalism’: A relational and embodied approach to young children's development
This article begins by discussing ‘developmentalism’, one of the key debates that has characterised the current theoretical impasse in the development of childhood studies. I use Norbert Elias's concept of the relation between love and learning as a foundation to develop the way in which young children's development is a non‐linear, temporal and embodied process. I argue that we need to develop a relational approach that moves beyond some of the …
Figurational Sociology
Figurational sociology” or “process sociology” are terms associated with a research tradition strongly influenced by the work of the German Jewish sociologist Norbert Elias (1897–1990). Human beings are social beings embedded in figurations which are always changing and developing, but continue to be mainly unplanned. Elias used concepts that can help to explain the development of sociopsychological processes in society, emphasizing the strong, a…
Convergence Culture Reconsidered: Media - Participation - Environments
The conference was the third in a series of transatlantic conferences initially funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). It thus formed a follow-up to the conferences on Transmedial Approaches to Space and Gender (organized by Susan Ingram and Markus Reisenleitner, York University of Toronto, in 2011) and Mediation and Mediatization (organized by Jutta Ernst, Johannes-Gutenberg-Universitt Mainz/ Germersheim, in 2012
Survival Units as the Point of Departure for a Relational Sociology
Human beings in the round’: Towards a general theory of the human sciences
In this introduction we highlight Norbert Elias’s bold attempt to build a general model of the human sciences, integrating the social and natural sciences. We point to a range of different disciplines, emphasizing how he rarely developed a consistent critique of individual disciplines, though he often made some very fruitful suggestions about they should be reconceptualized in a relational and more integrative way. Based on our own research on su…
Growing up beside you: A relational sociology of early childhood
This article will begin by outlining influential attempts by historians and sociologists to develop a more adequate theoretical understanding of past and contemporary childhoods, focusing on the major problems that stem from the pivotal role that ‘developmentalism’ plays in their arguments. I will argue that sociologists can overcome some of their deepest fears about the role of developmental psychology by developing a relational approach that in…
Survival Units as the Point of Departure for a Relational Sociology
European social theory has always been characterized by different dichotomous positions. Action-structure, subjectivism-objectivism, and methodological individualism-methodological holism are conflicting positions that have been competing throughout the history of European social theory. Each of these positions enables and constrains one's framework for sociological analysis. With the rise of modern sociological theory in the late nineteenth cent…
Handing over the Torch: Intergenerational Processes in Figurational Sociology
This collection of essays is designed to show how the various concepts of Norbert Elias's writings fit together in an overall vision for sociology, and how this has come to inspire the wide-ranging and interdisciplinary research tradition of 'figurational' sociology. In this introduction, we focus on a somewhat neglected aspect of Elias's work, the concept of generation. We explore his role as a teacher, passing the torch to a first generation of…
Norbert Elias and Developmental Psychology
This paper looks at the important similarities between Norbert Elias and two of the most well-known developmental psychologists of childhood, John Bowlby and Lev Vygotsky. After discussing some of the connections in their approach to the social learning of young children, it argues that Elias's perspective is more suitable for integrating the affective and cognitive aspects of early development and comparing the many different types of language t…
The Importance of Survival Units for Norbert Elias's Figurational Perspective
In this paper, we argue that Norbert Elias's concept of survival unit is a distinctive part of the development of his figurational sociology and one of the most consistent contributions to relational thinking. The survival unit is a particular form of figuration which provides security and the material foundations for life such as food and shelter. Every human being is born into a survival unit. This unit is a relational concept which cannot be c…
Nicole Gabriel, Eros and the death drive in Don Juan come back from war The present article puts forward an interpretation of Hovàrth's play Don Juan comes back from war based on the theory of drives as reelaborated by Freud after World War I, a development which he had already been anticipating in a previous text, The Theme of the three caskets, which several features in Hovàrth's play recall The era that opened in the post war years, the joyles…
Unification allemande: L'Aigle Et La Cigogne
Nicole Gabriel, The 183 and the Stork Abortion legislation was the subject of intense controversy at the time of German reunification. For the first time, a matter of criminal law played a role in a matter of State. This article sums up how the legal situations and actual behaviour developed differently in the former GDR and FRG and analyses the decisive intervention made by women. The result of this mobilisation by women — a "reprieve" for the m…
