    Open Access•H Michael Erisman•ARTICLE•International Journal of Cuban…•2023

This article explores Cuba’s status within the context of strategic minerals politics, focusing specifically on cobalt. Cuba has the third largest cobalt reserves in the world, which is a crucial element in lithium-ion batteries (especially those used in electric cars). The US, on the other hand, is sorely lacking in cobalt, which is on Washington’s list of Strategic Raw Minerals and is ranked third in terms of its “supply chain risk”. The key is…

  • Cuba's International Relations: The Anatomy of a Nationalistic Foreign Policy

    H Michael Erisman•BOOK•Cuba's International Relations•2019

From its inception, Fidel Castro's revolution has exerted an impact on the international scene far out of proportion to Cuba's modest size and limited resources. This phenomenon became more pronounced in the mid-1970s as Havana's foreign policies took on truly global parameters that involved the dispatch of large combat forces to Angola and Ethiopia, the initiation of ambitious military and developmental aid programs for Third World nations, and …

  • The Caricom States and US Foreign Policy: The Danger of Central Americanization

    Open Access•H Michael Erisman•ARTICLE•Journal of Interamerican Studies…•1989•Cited by: 1•References: 7

Traditionally most North Americans look upon the English-speaking Caribbean primarily as a place for tourists to pursue their quest for the three S's: sun, sand and surf- a perspective which generates little, if any, concern for the region's political dynamics. Indeed, the prevailing attitude seems to be that these countries, known collectively as the CARICOM states, are not politically important because they are so small and thus not worth the t…
