  • The unsatisfactory state of physical activity and lifestyle among schoolchildren calls for changes in physical education teacher training

Open Access•Dorota Groffik, Karel Frömel et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Sports and Active…•2026

Background: Improving physical activity (PA) and lifestyle among schoolchildren has long been a priority in health policy; however, the outcomes of these global efforts remain unsatisfactory. One key prerequisite for achieving positive change is improving the professional training of physical education (PE) teachers. The study aimed to examine changes in PE teacher training focused on monitoring students' own PA, to compare these findings with ev…

  • Environmental influences on children’s active travel

Open Access•J Burian, Michal Vorlíček et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2026

This study examines how the built environment influences children’s physical activity during school travel and within school neighborhoods in Olomouc, Czechia. The dataset combines accelerometer-measured activity, manually mapped routes, and GIS-based environmental indicators. Data from 161 eighth-grade pupils across ten primary schools were analyzed using 25 m route buffers and 500 m network service areas around schools. Variables included build…

  • Does active participation in organised physical activity contribute to children’s achievement of the 24-hour movement guidelines? findings from the family physical activity, sedentary behaviour, and s…

Open Access•Erik Sigmund, Dagmar Sigmundová et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

Even in young children, active participation in OPA tend to contribute to a healthier lifestyle profile, characterised by shorter sedentary behaviour and lower excess body weight, with a significant influence from the mother's movement behaviour

  • When gender matters

Open Access•Dagmar Sigmundová, Jaroslava Voráčová et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

Family is important for the support and promotion of healthy movement behaviors of children. Therefore, the aim of this study was to identify parental characteristics that are associated with children’s adherence to the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines on 24-hour movement behavior (24hMB), based on accelerometer data from the daily lives of both parents and their families. The 24-hour movement behavior (24hMB) of 217 family triads was c…

  • Raising active children

Open Access•Michal Vorlíček, Jan Dygrýn et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Sports and Active…•2025•References: 3

This study investigated the combined impact of family dynamics and school environments on physical activity levels in children aged 3-9 years across distinct segments of the school day. Conducted as part of the FAMIPASS project in the Czech Republic, the study collected data in 2022 and 2023 from 502 families affiliated with 36 preschools and primary schools. The device-based monitoring of movement behaviors in children and their parents was cond…

  • Parent–Child Associations in Accelerometer-Measured Physical Activity and Sedentary Behaviour

Open Access•Dagmar Sigmundová, Jaroslava Voráčová et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2024

Parent-child patterns in objectively measured movement behaviours were the highlight of this study. A total of 381 families (337 mothers, 256 fathers, 190 daughters, and 191 sons) from 36 randomly selected schools and kindergartens provided valid accelerometer data. Sedentary behaviour and physical activity (PA) were assessed using ActiGraph accelerometers. Spearman's rho was used to evaluate parent-child associations, while logistic regression a…

  • Comparative Analysis of 24-h Movement Behaviours in Non-Overweight and Overweight/Obese Children

Open Access•Erik Sigmund, Jaroslava Voráčová et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2024

Non-overweight children exhibited higher levels of PA and lower levels of SB compared to their counterparts with overweight/obesity, independent of gender, age, or family SES. These findings highlight an association between daily movement behaviours and weight status in young children. Further research is needed to explore the impact of modifying PA and SB on weight outcomes

  • How Czech Adolescents Perceive Their Physical Activity

Open Access•Ferdinand Salonna, Michal Vorlíček et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2023

Adolescence is a critical stage in the development of an individual's physical activity (PA) habits and preferences. Adolescents' perceptions of PA can influence their motivation to engage in PA and, consequently, their overall level of PA. Thus, our primary aim was to investigate whether Czech adolescents misperceive their peers' PA. Our dataset comprised cross-sectional data on 1289 adolescents aged 11-15 years. PA was measured using self-repor…

  • How Czech Adolescents Perceive Active Commuting to School

Open Access•Michal Vorlíček, Petr Baďura et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

To achieve a healthy lifestyle, adolescents must be physically active and meet physical activity (PA) guidelines. One of the most natural ways of increasing the amount of PA is active commuting (AC) to school. Recent reviews suggest that peer norms have the potential to shape PA during adolescence in particular. Thus, our primary aim was to investigate whether Czech adolescents misperceive their peers' AC behaviors and attitudes towards AC. Our d…

  • Is Pedometer-Determined Physical Activity Decreasing in Czech Adults? Findings from 2008 to 2013

Open Access•Jana Pelclová, Karel Frömel et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2016

Objective measured trend data are important for public health practice. However, these data are rare for an adult population. Therefore, the aim of this study was to describe time trends in pedometer-determined physical activity of Czech adults (25-65 years) from 2008 to 2013. Participants were Czech national citizens whose physical activity was assessed objectively using a Yamax Digiwalker SW-700 pedometer (Yamax Corporation, Tokyo, Japan) for s…
