  • Standardising the preparation for, and delivery of care during, and after critical incidents: A Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine position statement

Open Access•Neil Heron, Steffan Griffin•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Sports and Active…•2026

Participation in sport provides substantial physical and mental health benefits; however, it also carries a risk of rare but high-impact critical incidents. This policy brief outlines a practical, standardised framework for the preparation, management, and follow-up of such incidents in sport. Drawing on current evidence and expert consensus, we emphasise the importance of robust, rehearsed emergency action plans tailored to specific environments…

  • Female cyclists' experiences of saddle sores and their effect on cycling

Open Access•Louise Burnie, Phil Burt et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Sports and Active…•2026•References: 3

These findings highlight the need for improved education on the prevention and treatment of saddle sores and more research into female-specific bicycle setup and saddle design

  • Pre-school-based behaviour change intervention to increase physical activity levels amongst young children: A feasibility cluster randomised controlled trial

    Open Access•Mosfer A Al-walah, Michael Donnelly et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2024

Background A significant rise in childhood obesity worldwide over the past three decades highlights the urgent need for early interventions, especially in preschools as key settings for child development. This study aimed to assess the feasibility and fidelity of a randomised controlled trial of “I’m an Active Hero” (IAAH), a theory- and evidence-based multi-component behaviour change intervention targeting physical activity and sedentary behavio…

  • A systematic review protocol of injuries and illness across all the competitive cycling disciplines, including track cycling, mountain biking, road cycling, time trial, cyclocross, gravel cycling, BMX…

Open Access•Thomas Fallon, Neil Heron•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Sports and Active…•2024

  • If in Doubt, Sit Them Out’: How Long to Return to Elite Cycling Competition following a Sports-Related Concussion (SRC)

Open Access•Neil Heron, Nigel Jones et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023

This is the first study to report SRC concussion recovery times in elite cycling, including para-athletes. Between January 2017 and September 2022, there were 88 concussions diagnosed at BC and the median duration for time out of competition for all concussions was 16 days. There was no statistically significant difference in recovery times between male and females and para- and able-bodied athletes. This data should be used to help establish min…

  • Stroke and TIA Survivors’ Perceptions of the Covid-19 Vaccine and Influences on Its Uptake: Cross Sectional Survey

Open Access•Grace Turner, Grace M Turner et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

Despite high uptake of the first vaccine, some people with stroke and TIA have legitimate concerns and information needs that should be addressed. Our findings can be used to identify targets for behaviour change to improve vaccine uptake specific to stroke/TIA patients

  • A Scoping Review: Mapping the Evidence for Undergraduate Concussion Education and Proposing the Content for Medical Student Concussion Teaching

    Open Access•Nick Gardner, Neil Heron•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

Concussion: education of medical students is inadequate in North America. Medical schools should help address this by providing lectures and clinical presentations on concussion to learn from, particularly via problem-based learning. There is a paucity of evidence about concussion education in other geographical areas

  • Development of a Digital Lifestyle Modification Intervention for Use after Transient Ischaemic Attack or Minor Stroke: A Person-Based Approach

    Open Access•Neil Heron, Sean O’Connor et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

This paper describes the development of the 'Brain-Fit' app, a digital secondary prevention intervention designed for use in the early phase after transient ischaemic attack (TIA) or minor stroke. The aim of the study was to explore perceptions on usability and relevance of the app in order to maximise user engagement and sustainability. Using the theory- and evidence-informed person-based approach, initial planning included a scoping review of q…

  • Usability and Acceptability of a Novel Secondary Prevention Initiative Targeting Physical Activity for Individuals after a Transient Ischaemic Attack or “Minor” Stroke: A Qualitative Study

    Open Access•Neil Heron, Sean O’Connor et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

Behavioural interventions that address cardiovascular risk factors such as physical inactivity and hypertension help reduce recurrence risk following a transient ischaemic attack (TIA) or "minor" stroke, but an optimal approach for providing secondary prevention is unclear. After developing an initial draft of an innovative manual for patients, aiming to promote secondary prevention following TIA or minor stroke, we aimed to explore views about i…

  • The Effectiveness of Individual or Group Physiotherapy in the Management of Sub-Acromial Impingement: A Randomised Controlled Trial and Health Economic Analysis

Open Access•Ian Ryans, Rhona Galway et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

Background : Shoulder pain is common in primary care. The management of subacromial impingement (SAI) can include corticosteroid injections and physiotherapy. Physiotherapy can be on an individual or group basis. Aim : To examine the clinical effectiveness and make an economic analysis of individual versus group physiotherapy, following corticosteroid injection for SAI. Design and Setting : A single-blind, open-label, randomised equivalence study…
