  • Development and evaluation of a values-based anti-doping education program for university sport in Japan

Open Access•Yuka Murofushi, Yusuke Okada et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Sports and Active…•2026

Background Anti-doping education has increasingly emphasized values-based approaches that aim to foster ethical decision-making and long-term engagement in clean sport. However, relatively few studies have reported the systematic development and evaluation of educational programs specifically designed for university athletes within authentic educational contexts. Purpose The present study aimed to develop and preliminarily evaluate a UNIVAS anti-…

  • Current situation and influencing factors of scientific literacy in fitness of Chinese children and adolescents

Open Access•Yanfeng Zhang, Deqiang Zhao et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2026

Objective This study aimed to develop and validate a scientific fitness literacy (SFL) assessment model for Chinese children and adolescents and to examine the associations between SFL and its key influencing factors within an integrated social–ecological and self-determination theory framework. Methods Data were collected from 147,104 students (grades 4–12) across 31 provinces in mainland China using a multi-stage cluster random sampling design.…

Open Access•Misaki Matsunaga, Koya Suzuki et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2025

Introduction: Physical literacy contributes to physical activity and comprises four conceptually interrelated domains: physical, emotional, social, and cognitive. The International Sport and Culture Association proposed the Physical Literacy for Life self-assessment tool (PL4L); however, its factor structure and usability are not clear. This study aimed to examine the factor structure and internal consistency of the PL4L in adults and its associa…

  • Tracking handgrip strength in Kendo athletes from university to middle and older adulthood

Open Access•Takashi Abe, Shuichi Machida et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2024

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare the current handgrip strength (HGS) of Kendo athletes with their HGS when they were in university (up to 50 years). METHODS: Eighty male graduates who were Kendo club members during their university days performed anthropometric and HGS measurements, and these HGS were compared with those measured during their university days (mean age of 19.5 years old). RESULTS: There was no evidence of a statistical diffe…

  • Athletes in sporting events with upper‐body gripping movements have greater handgrip strength than those in sporting events that prioritize the lower body

Open Access•Takashi Abe, Yoshimitsu Kohmura et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2023

OBJECTIVE: Evidence suggests that acquiring a high level of handgrip strength early in life and maintaining that strength throughout life may be important for health. In addition, it is thought that sports activities performed during the developmental period are effective in improving handgrip strength, but it is unknown what types of sports are more effective. As a first step, we conducted a cross-sectional study to compare handgrip strength acr…

  • Relationship between Skeletal Muscle Thickness and Physical Activity in 4- to 6-Year-Olds in Japan

Open Access•Pengyu Deng, Hayao Ozaki et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2023

The time spent involved in most of the different categories of moderate-to-vigorous PA was significantly higher for boys than for girls on the weekdays and weekends. Additionally, there was a positive correlation between time spent in moderate-to-vigorous PA and greater development of skeletal muscle in the lower body

  • Associations of Morphological Changes in Skeletal Muscles of Preschool Children in China Following Physical Activity

Open Access•Pengyu Deng, Hayao Ozaki et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2023

We found that the muscle thickness of the posterior thigh in preschool children was significantly positively associated with PA, as measured by daily steps and MVPA. We suggest that for the overall health and well-being of preschool children, the levels of PA should be maintained and/or increased, and preferably transformed into a regular part of daily living

  • The association between subjective anti-doping knowledge and objective knowledge among Japanese university athletes

Open Access•Yuka Murofushi, Etsuko Kamihigashi et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Sports and Active…•2023•References: 6

The present results revealed that Japanese university athletes' subjective ADK did not match their objective ADK . In the context of the TPB , there may be limitations in the perceived behavioral control in anti-doping knowledge. Even if athletes view doping as a wrongful act and have formed attitudes and subjective norms to comply with the rules, the results suggest that errors may occur in the composition of behavioral intentions due to a lack …

  • A longitudinal study of handgrip strength asymmetry

Open Access•Takashi Abe, Hayao Ozaki et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2022

OBJECTIVE: The previous results from cross-sectional studies indicate that there could be alterations across time in handgrip strength (HGS) asymmetry. One way to investigate this is to test the same children multiple times. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the laterality of HGS in healthy young children at two different time points separated by a year. METHODS: A total of 165 preschool children (79 males and 87 females) between the ages of 4.5 an…

  • Association between Daily Physical Activity and Locomotive Syndrome in Community-Dwelling Japanese Older Adults

Open Access•Yoshihiko Ishihara, Hayao Ozaki et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

This study aimed to evaluate the association between locomotive syndrome (LS) and daily physical activity (PA) in community-dwelling older adults. This cross-sectional study included 80 healthy Japanese older adults (40 men and 40 women; age: 60-79 years). Habitual daily PA was evaluated using a triaxial wrist accelerometer. Participants were divided into two groups based on the results of the two-step test, stand-up test, and 25-question geriatr…

  • Relationship between the level of willingness to learn about anti-doping and objective knowledge among Japanese university athletes

Open Access•Yuka Murofushi, Yujiro Kawata et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Sports and Active…•2022•References: 1

Previous studies have indicated that athletes' anti-doping knowledge is inadequate. Athletes' willingness to learn about anti-doping ( willingness to learn ) may influence their anti-doping knowledge, but the actual situation is unclear. This study aimed to determine the relationship between athletes' willingness to learn about anti-doping and their objective measurement knowledge and explore directions for educational interventions. The eligible…

  • The Measurement of Strength in Children

Open Access•Hayao Ozaki, Takashi Abe et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2020

It is unclear whether the measurement of maximum muscle strength in younger children can be performed accurately due to factors such as motivation and maturity (i.e., the ability to receive instruction). If there is a large change in a ratio between muscular strength and size from the youngest to the oldest, then this might provide some indication that the youngest may not have been able to voluntarily activate their muscles for reasons mentioned…

  • Moderate-to-vigorous physical activity attenuates the detrimental effects of television viewing on the cardiorespiratory fitness in Asian adolescents

Open Access•Tetsuhiro Kidokoro, Koya Suzuki et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2019

Background Moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and television viewing are independently associated with cardiorespiratory fitness. However, limited evidence is available on their combined effects, specifically of MVPA and watching television, on cardiorespiratory fitness in the young Asian population. Therefore, the present study examined whether MVPA can attenuate the detrimental effects of prolonged television viewing on the cardiores…

  • Association between objectively measured physical activity and body mass index with low back pain

Open Access•Yuko Hashimoto, Ko Matsudaira et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2018

The present study showed that both PA and BMI are related to persistent LBP. Also, the prevalence of persistent LBP became higher when PA low and high BMI are combined rather than the group of PA high and low BMI combination

  • Cardiorespiratory fitness, body mass index, and cancer mortality

    Open Access•Susumu S Sawada, I-Min Lee et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2014

These results suggest that high CRF is associated with lower cancer mortality in a Japanese population of men with low average BMI
