  • Challenges in cochlear implant care for patients with migration backgrounds: Evaluating (Hr)QoL

Open Access•Susann Thyson, Kai G Kahl et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Migration and Health•2026•References: 2

PwCI with a MB tended to have lower QoL and HrQoL, potentially due to factors such as language barriers, and limited healthcare access. Language proficiency appeared to play a role, while length of residence showed no clear effect. Addressing linguistic and cultural barriers, could help improve healthcare access. Enhancing communication and support may facilitate greater participation in rehabilitation and treatment adherence, potentially leading…

  • Unseen dualities: Underdiagnosis of substance use disorders in borderline personality disorder

Open Access•Jana Nabel, Sebastian Bertele et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2025

Our data confirm high prevalence of SUDs in BPD patients. Of note, medical records underrecognized alcohol abuse and cannabis abuse and dependence. Substance abuse and dependence are primary risk factors of suicidal behaviors and completed suicide. SUDs have been shown to be amenable to psychotherapeutic interventions. Therefore, careful diagnosis of SUD by e.g. expert structured interviews and integration of SUDs in a multimodal treatment plan i…

  • Initial evidence for neural correlates following a therapeutic intervention: Altered resting state functional connectivity in the default mode network following attention training technique

Open Access•Torben Müller, Svenja Krug et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2025

We found a first hint of a change at the neural level on the basis of ATT. Whether the changes in rsFC found here indicate an improvement in the flexible shift of attentional focus due to ATT needs to be investigated in further research paradigms. Further experiments have to show whether this change in functional connectivity can be used as a specific outcome measure of ATT treatment

  • Increased epicardial tissue and reduced Tapse and Mapse scores in borderline personality disorders. Early indicators for cardiovascular risk

    Open Access•Caitlin Schaefer, Charlotte F M Schaefer et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2025

The present study demonstrates morphological and functional differences in a matched sample of female patients with BPD and healthy controls, pointing to an increased risk for the development of cardiovascular disorders. These findings highlight the importance of screening for cardiovascular risk markers and of including interventions that aim to improve adverse life-style habits early on in the clinical management of BPD

  • Short sleep duration in adults with congenital heart disease is associated with epicardial adipose tissue accumulation

Open Access•Britta Stapel, Lotta Winter et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2025

Short sleep duration has been linked to an increased risk of cardiometabolic disorders and adverse outcomes, including hospitalization and mortality, in patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD). We assessed the association between sleep duration and cardiovascular parameters in adults with congenital heart disease (ACHD). Data were derived from the ongoing PSYConHEART study on morbidity and mortality factors in ACHD. Sleep duration, sociodemogr…

  • Improving mental well-being in psychocardiology—a feasibility trial for a non-blended web application as a brief metacognitive-based intervention in cardiovascular disease patients

Open Access•Katharina Larionov, Ekaterina Petrova et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2023

Applying a metacognitive-based brief intervention via a non-blended web app seems to show good acceptance and feasibility in a small target group of patients with CVD. Future studies should further develop, improve and validate digital psychotherapy approaches, especially in patient groups with a lack of access to standard psychotherapeutic care

  • Impact of relationship status on psychological parameters in adults with congenital heart disease

Open Access•Britta Stapel, Nicole Scharn et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2023

Relationships status was associated with depression, while sex was associated with anxiety in ACHD patients. Relationship status as well as potential relationship problems, and the importance of social support for mental and physical well-being, should be considered when treating ACHD patients

  • Determinants of severe QTc prolongation in a real-world gerontopsychiatric setting

Open Access•Martin Schulze Westhoff, Sebastian Schröder et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2023

Introduction QT c prolongation carries the risk of ventricular tachyarrhythmia (Torsades de Pointes) and sudden cardiac death. Psychotropic drugs can affect ventricular repolarization and thus prolong the QT c interval. The present study sought to investigate the risk factors (pharmacological and non-pharmacological) of severe QT c prolongation in gerontopsychiatric patients. Methods Electrocardiograms of patients on a gerontopsychiatric ward wer…

We found a higher rate of child maltreatment in patients with CTEPH in comparison to the German population. Correlations suggest moderate associations between CTQ scores and mental health and QoL. Child maltreatment had no significant impact on disease severity. Further investigation on proper interventions to support affected patients is needed

  • Childhood Trauma in Patients With PAH—Prevalence, Impact on QoL, and Mental Health—A Preliminary Report

Open Access•Da‐Hee Park, Tanja Meltendorf et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2022

We found a higher rate of child maltreatment in patients with PAH in comparison to the German population. Correlations suggest moderate associations between CTQ-scores and mental health as well as QoL. Child maltreatment had significant impact on disease severity. However, effects were moderate. We conclude that child maltreatment has effects on mental health and quality of life in patients with PAH and may have limited effect on disease severity

  • Depressive Symptoms and Quality of Life in Patients With Heart Failure and an Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator

Open Access•Christos Zormpas, Kai G Kahl et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2022

Depressive symptoms correlate with low QoL and lower long-term functional status in patients with HF and an ICD. Depressive symptoms are associated with smoking and obesity, which themselves are risk factors for a poor prognosis in HF. Only a small fraction of patients with HF and ICD showing depressive symptoms receives appropriate treatment. Assessing depressive symptoms and lifestyle factors should be part of a multimodal treatment plan in pat…

  • MicroRNAs as novel peripheral markers for suicidality in patients with major depressive disorder

Open Access•Britta Stapel, Ke Xiao et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2022
